The Calcutta High Court has ordered veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to pay INR 4 lakhs monthly in alimony to his estranged wife and their daughter. However, Shami’s ex-wife, Hasin Jahan, expressed disappointment with the ruling, stating she had sought INR 10 lakhs.

Mohammed Shami received a significant legal setback, after the Calcutta High Court ruled in favor of his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan. Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee directed the 34-year-old to provide a monthly alimony payment of INR 4 lakhs. Of this sum, INR 1.5 lakhs has been designated for Jahan’s personal maintenance, with the remaining INR 2.5 lakhs for the well-being of their ten-year-old daughter.

Mohammed Shami and his wife have been engaged in a legal dispute for over six years, ever since their separation in 2018. The couple, who married in 2014, split after Jahan accused the cricketer of domestic violence and adultery. Shami was also accused of attempted murder and poisoning, and an arrest warrant was even issued against the bowler by the Alipore Court in 2019, though it was later stayed.

Hasin Jahan even claimed that her husband was involved in match-fixing, leading to an investigation by the BCCI’s anti-corruption unit. However, Shami was later cleared of all corruption charges. Meanwhile, the the Alipore Court delivered a judgment in Shami and Jahan’s highly-publicized legal battle. The court had initially ordered Shami to pay INR 50,000 in alimony to his wife and an additional INR 80,000 for their daughter’s expenses.

Hasin Jahan’s legal counsel however, challenged the subordinate court’s order. In its recent decision, the Calcutta High Court questioned the lower court’s reasoning for awarding a much small sum, as Hasin Jahan has not remarried and lives solely with her daughter. The court also highlighted the Indian bowler’s substantial annual income, which is approximately INR 7.19 crores, thereafter directing him to pay more.

Despite the court’s judgement going in her favor, Hasin Jahan nevertheless expressed discontentment over the amount that the 34-year-old has been mandated to pay. She stated that the INR 4 lakh/month alimony is considerably insufficient, compared to Shami’s earnings and the lifestyle.

Jahan added that her legal team had demanded INR 10 lakhs, due to exceeding costs of living, and declared her intention to once again appeal the High Court’s recent directive. She told PTI:

The way he leads his lifestyle, 4 lakh is less. We demanded 10 lakh four years ago. The cost of living has increased now. And we will demand it again.

Hasin Jahan further explained that her demand for a high alimony stems from the fact that she has no income of her own. She even blamed Shami of compelling her to abandon her modeling career after their marriage in 2014, thereby obligating the player to assume all her future financial responsibilities.

Why has Mohammed Shami Been Left Out of India’s Squad for the Ongoing England Tour?

Amid India’s bowling struggles in the first Test match of the ongoing red-ball tour to England, it raised questions over veteran pacer Mohammed Shami’s omission from the squad. The 34-year-old pacer was left out, with youngsters Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, and Arshdeep Singh being picked instead.

Many believe Mohammed Shami’s absence is due to his poor form and recurrent injuries. The right-arm pacer has not played a Test match for India since the 2023 WTC final. Explaining the decision, Indian selector Ajit Agarkar stated that Shami was omitted from the side to manage his workload, and also because of the fact that he would not be able to play all five matches or bowl long spells.

Shami had he been selected for the England Tests, would have added the much-needed experience in the Indian bowling attack. The 34-year-old has a record of 42 wickets in 14 Test matches in England, averaging 40.50. Overall, Shami boasts 229 wickets in the longest format, at an average of 27.71.
