World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas started his season strongly in Melbourne, going on an eight-match unbeaten run before losing in the semifinals of the the Australian Open.
He continued his hot form in Rotterdam and Acapulco, losing to Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev in the semis and finals respectively. He was last seen at the Miami Open, where he was knocked out in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz.
His opponent Aslan Karatsev has had a dream breakthrough this season. As a qualifier, he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open. He defeated the likes of Diego Schwartzman, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Grigor Dimitrov in Melbourne before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
In the first round in Monte Carlo, he registered his first win on Clay against in form teen, Lorenzo Musetti of Italy.
