The World Series title celebrations is still going on in Los Angeles. Last Saturday, the Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays to repeat as champions. On a recent podcast appearance, stars Mookie Betts and Kike Hernandez admitted that they won the series without playing good.
The Dodgers reached their second successive World Series after sweeping the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series (NLCS). The Brewers had the best record in the league this year and were 6-0 against the Dodgers.
As they cruised through the World Series, the Blue Jays traded punches left and right with the Seattle Mariners in the American League Championship Series (ALCS). A topsy-turvy series saw the Canadian outfit beat the Mariners in Game 7 and reach their first World Series since 1993.
The showdown between the Dodgers and the Blue Jays turned out to be one for the ages. In Game 7, the Blue Jays lead their opponents 4-2 heading into the top of the 8th inning and were just 6 outs from their first championship title in 32 years.
A solo home run from Max Muncy in the 8th inning was followed by a game-tying home run in the 9th inning from Miguel Rojas. In the 11th inning, the Dodgers took the lead through a solo home run from Will Smith and proceeded to turn a double play in the next frame to win 5-4 and clinch their 2nd successive title.
During a recent episode of Mookie Betts’ On Base podcast, several Dodgers’ stars made an appearance. In this, Kike Hernandez and Betts got into a discussion and expressed that they won the World Series despite not playing at their best.
We never really got up, and never got down.

Hernandez nodded in agreement to his teammate’s comment.
We did not play good and we won a World Series.

Statistically, the Dodgers were the second-best team in this matchup. They got outscored 34-26 and had 22 fewer hits than the Blue Jays (75 hits). The AL champions were also better defensively and did not commit a single error in the field. The Dodgers, meanwhile, had 3 errors in the 7 game series.
Social media reacts to Mookie Betts and Kike Hernandez’ comments
The Los Angeles Dodgers shocked the Toronto Blue Jays in their home stadium with a comeback victory in Game 7. A few days after their triumph, their players Mookie Betts and Kike Hernandez admitted that they were not at their best in this victory.

These comments from the duo have left the MLB fans on social media divided. While some found their words to be arrogant, some believed that this shows how better the Dodgers actually are.

Can't even give opponents credit, you didn't play good because the opposing pitching staff held you to not playing good

Mookie did NOTHING and won a WS. Literally backpacked in that WS.

Yeah usually when you have all the talent the margin for error is higher
— Quiet Storm (@RealDreTay) November 7, 2025
That speaks to how good the team is. For a team to not play very well but to have a few stars on the team step up and shine bright enough to win?? That’s a scary team

Winning the World Series without playing ‘good’ sounds like the ultimate cheat code unlocked! Sometimes it’s not about how you play, but that you keep winning anyway — Dodgers: world champions and masters of the art of surprise! 🏆😎

I don't care about the "bought a championship" stuff – I'm a Mets fan after all – but why even say what he said, it just comes off as arrogant and disrespectful to the Jays. You won, cool, just take the win without being a tosser.

That’s not a flex. Buying a championship is not cool
— Tictacmagic (@tictacmagic_) November 7, 2025
I mean it’s true and that’s what’s scary
— NYYANKEES (@AKNYY93) November 7, 2025
Completely true. Dodgers were mid.

After jays games 5,6 wins they looked unstoppable but choked hard in games 6,7. A big u- turn
Following Game 7, Sportsnet analyst Caleb Joseph claimed that the “best team” did not win this series. Hernandez would later hit back at him through a post on Instagram and expressed that he was “happy” that the best team did not win the 2025 Fall Classic.
Mookie Betts labels 2025 World Series 18-inning Game 3 as boring
The 2025 World Series produced several highlight moments and storylines. One of them was the marathon 18-inning Game 3 that lasted 6 hours and 39 minutes. Mookie Betts though, did not seem to be a big fan of this and called it a “boring” game.

With the series levelled at 1-1, the two teams travelled to Los Angeles for Games 3, 4 and 5. After taking a 2-0 lead through solo home runs from Teoscar Hernandez and Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers fell 3-2 down through a 3-run home run from Alejandro Kirk.
After going 4-2 down, a double from Ohtani and a single from Freddie Freeman tied the game at 4-4 in the 5th inning. A single from Bo Bichette in the 7th inning made it a 5-4 game. Ohtani then slammed his 2nd home run of the game to level the scores again at 5-5.
Following this, a pitching duel erupted between the two bullpens. Both teams kept on missing chances of scoring in the extra innings. This game tied the record for the longest World Series game (innings-wise) went it headed into the 18th inning.
On a 3-2 pitch, Freddie Freeman ended the contest with a walk-off solo home run. The 1st baseman thus became the first player to have multiple walk-off home runs in World Series history.
The last time a World Series game went into 18 innings was in 2018. Game 3 of the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers stretched over 7 hours. That day, Betts was in the Red Sox corner. A Max Muncy solo walk-off home run in the bottom of the 18th inning ended the game.
On the On Base podcast, Betts claimed that this was the most “boring” 18-innings game he had been part of.
I want to talk to everybody about like the 18-inning game because I thought it was one of the most boring 18-inning games that I’ve ever been a part of… We didn’t have any action like it was just homers but I loved it but I’m like I feel like the 11-inning game was way more action-packed in a tighter.

Things could have ended a bit earlier had Betts or someone else managed to put up a big hit. The shortstop went 1-for-8 in that game. Relief pitcher Will Klein ended up the winning pitcher as he threw 4 scoreless innings.
