“I was in survival mode,” Darryn Binder reacts to his poor performance at the 2022 British GP

Rookie Darryn Binder got to experience racing at Silverstone for the first time on a MotoGP bike. This was also the first race after the MotoGP summer break. The Yamaha With U rider has raced there previously in a different category. While it’s an honour for every racer to ride at Silverstone, it may not have been the best of experiences for the fellow South African Rider.

Not testing the hard tyre during free practice proved to be a big disadvantage for Darryn Binder when race day approached. During the opening few laps of the 2022 British Grand Prix, Darryn Binder overtook some riders to go from 23rd to 18th. He further realised a mistake that he made midway during the race.

The South African was pretty satisfied with his opening laps during the year and this was one of the major causes for his poor performance. This being due to the Yamaha rider using much of his tyre’s life during the beginning stages of the race. Binder further went on to explain what happened in the race.

Around lap 10 I already realised that my tyre was disappearing really fast and at the end of the race I was in full survival mode. Just trying to get to the chequered flag. But I’ve learned quite a bit and I can explain to the guys where we need to work on with the used tyre. I’m glad that I saw the flag . I needed to finish the race and get a starting point for the second-half of the season. And… at least I wasn’t last!” he said.

“I tried every map the bike had! I played with every button, I was on the Game Boy there!” he stated.

It helps for sure. At the end I had it in the softest mode possible to just bring it home. I’m getting more used to playing with the buttons and stuff [during the race], just maybe we could work a bit more during the weekend to get those things fine-tuned to be  more consistent throughout the race,” the rider continued.

If Darryn Binder had followed his teammate Andrea Dovizioso’s steps in choosing the tyre to start the grand prix, his race result would have been comparatively different. The South African decided to go with the medium tyre while his teammate went for the hard rear tyre. Once the Grand Prix commenced, the only option left for the With U Yamaha rider was to change engine maps accordingly.
