Marc Marquez had a below par French GP as he finished P6 behind Johann Zarco after a decent result in his home Grand Prix which saw him finishing P4. But, it’s safe to say that the Spaniard didn’t have the pace to fight for the podium places against the likes of Enea Bastianini and Jack Miller. But despite of all of that, we have seen a pattern developing with the new MotoGP machineries which has made it impossible to overtake.
We saw a really frustrated defending champion, Fabio Quartararo, who despite having the pace couldn’t make inroads at the front of the grid. We have drivers doing half a second quicker laps than their competition but still being unable to overtake the opponent. This has made the races a little boring as the viewers always want to see overtaking maneuvers rather than faster lap times.
Every time that a driver tries to overtake, due to the lack of top speed, they are unable to do so as they are too far by the time they reach the braking zone. Marc Marquez also raised genuine concern regarding the same issue after being stuck Johann Zarco for most part of the race. This is something that the governing authority will need to look into at the earliest and make the necessary tweaks before it becomes a boring pattern.

Despite have a rich vein of drivers, we have seen very few overtakes and that was something addressed by Marc Marquez. He said, “I already said in the Safety Commission in the past that we are going this way. We are getting faster lap times, but people don’t realise if you are going half a second faster or slower, they want to see overtakes!“
“For example, Fabio was very fast but today he was ‘locked’ [behind Aleix Espargaro]. It was the same for Aleix behind [Marquez and Miller] in Jerez.”

The six time MotoGP world champion, Marc Marquez, is spot on when he talks about the lack of top speed and this is something that needs to addressed by the governing body to keep up the popularity of MotoGP.
