2020 MotoGP World Champion, Joan Mir Oozes Confidence after strong outing in Austin

When Suzuki Ecstar rider Joan Mir won the 2020 MotoGP Championship, fans all across the world cheered aloud because he was one of the most consistent riders on the track. Come 2022, he has been building up his pace and keeping silent about his improvements, but now he has got the fourth place in the World Championship charts and is oozing confidence in his latest interview after the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas.

Joan Mir has never tried to take down rivals like Bastianini and Quartararo, but he has kept pacing to the front of the line, steadily, but silently. As the MotoGP races are traveling to Europe now, the Spaniard has already had a few close calls with the podium, with two back-to-back P4 finishes in Argentina and Austin. When the season opened in Qatar, he had scored a P6, and then he repeated his feat in Mandalika, Indonesia.

With some standard race finishes to boost him up, Joan Mir wants to enter the European leg of the Championship guns blazing. His teammate Alex Rins has got the second position in the Championship, right behind Bastianini. With the unfolding of this new campaign, any bike manufacturer can clinch the top spot, with the riders standing a chance to get a 25-point haul in their Championship scores at every race.

At this point in time, Mir’s steady improvement speaks a lot for his potential podium finishes in the future. Even when he became World Champion in 2020, he had always claimed consistency was his only key to that place.

Heading into the Portuguese Grand Prix weekend, Mir needs 15 points to catch up with current World Championship standings leader Enea Bastianini. After the end of the race at COTA, the Crew Chief of Joan Mir’s team said he had never seen the rider so confident and it was one of the best performances of Mir’s career.

On being asked about his performance, Mir said, “This is a track that, when you don’t enjoy riding, you always miss something, no? So to be able to finish here in the fourth position is something great, it means that we are doing steps forward, positive ones.

He further said, “We came from the back, that the last part of the race was positive. And step by step I was overtaking and I was feeling great. So [I’m] pleased how everything is going, fourth position is always a position that you don’t want to finish in, it’s better either fifth or third [laughs] but anyway, it’s great.

Overall, it is safe to say that Joan Mir is in a good place right now. He can keep his cool and steer through the race track with a calm disposition. With teammate Alex Rins by his side, the Suzuki Ecstar rider can hope for some good results with podiums and even race wins in the near future.
