“I was sh**ting in my pants,” Alex Marquez looks back at his ‘scary’ near miss at Mugello which could have led to disaster
Alex Marquez looks back at his scary turn 1 incident at the 2023 Mugello MotoGP round.

Alex Marquez
The 2023 Mugello MotoGP round was a weekend filled with mixed emotions for Alex Marquez. The Spaniard had absolutely no luck in Saturday’s sprint race as he came home with zero points. Apart from that, the race seemed to be no different for the Gresini rider. He further went on to reveal his exact feelings during a scary incident that took place at Turn 1 at Mugello.
Alex Marquez stated that he was “sh**ting his pants” when he almost took out multiple riders at turn 1 in a near miss situation. The Spaniard was sitting behind KTM’s Jack Miller, Luca Marini and his brother Marc Marquez during the early stages of the Grand Prix. All hell almost broke loose when the Spaniard ran wide into Turn 1 and almost hit three riders.
This happened while Marquez was trying to take the corner and got out of shape with regards to his brakes. When the Spaniard was asked for an explanation, he stated that he was caught in a strong slipstream from following the rider in front. He furthermore stated that he had braked at his usual spot but the slipstream almost ruined it all and the Gresini rider was happy to not get caught in an incident.

Alex Marquez explains his near miss in Mugello

In an interview, here is what he had to say. “I broke really early, and then Luca and Marc did a really strange movement at that. And with the wings, it’s what we always say, the slipstream absorbs you directly. I was braking every time in the same pressure, but the bike was going [forward].“So, at that point, I said ‘what do I need to do?’ he said.
“And, luckily, they opened [a gap] a little bit and at that point I passed. I was not really late on the brakes, so it was a strange action honestly,” he stated. “When you lose all the downforce and more with two bikes [in front of you] it’s impossible. I said ‘fuck!’. I was shitting in my pants, honestly,” the Gresini racer continued. He insisted that this was all due to the slipstream and was glad that there was no incident.
Alex Marquez left Mugello without any points in the bag. His brother Marc Marquez was close to a podium finish before a crash ruined it all for the Repsol Honda rider. The Italian GP was a part of a MotoGP triple header with the German GP taking place this weekend and the Dutch GP taking place in the weekend after. It will be interesting to see how the two brothers perform moving forward.
