Ex-MotoGP rider Andrea Iannone is currently in the midst of serving a 4 year ban from the sport following a positive test for the banned steroid Drostanolone at the 2019 Malaysian Grand Prix. Since then the rider has served half of his sentence which will get over in the month of December in 2023. After a successful appeal by WADA, it was uncertain whether the Italian would be seen competing in the world championship again.

Back then, the Ex Ducati race winner was close to the end of his first season in MotoGP racing for Aprilia when he first insisted it was caused by eating contaminated meat. Although the CAS declared that the Italian rider was unable to provide any convincing evidence to establish that the anti-doping rule violation he committed was unintentional.

This increased the initial ban awarded by the FIM from 18 months to 4 years. After being absent from the sport for so long, the 33 year old rider is yearning for the racing action. Although questions will arise whether he will be able to be back on the same level like before after being out for so long.

“I’ll be back. I don’t know where, how and when, if in MotoGP or Superbike, but I guarantee it” : Andrea Iannone says on a possible return to racing

Andrea Iannone

“I’ll be back. I don’t know where, how and when, if in MotoGP or Superbike, but I guarantee it: I still can’t fill my life with other things than the bike or the speed. Dancing with the Stars was like a diversion and I’m spoiled for choice for everything that’s offered to me. If I get offers from TV it means that people are interested in me, but I guarantee you that I am focused on one thing : to get back to [riding]”  he said.

“I kept relationships with Aprilia, my former manager Carlo Pernat and Paolo Campinoti, who are like members of the family, but races are made to win, not for true friendships,” he continued.

It will be a long time until the rider can come back to racing in either MotoGP or the Superbike championship. With most riders signing for 2023 and 2024 in the premier class, it will be a bit tough to find a ride for the Italian. Do you think Andrea Iannone will be able to get back to Moto Racing in the premier class of racing on two wheels??
