Andrea Dovizioso announced on Thursday that he will be stepping down from his seat at RNF Yamaha MotoGP after the Italian rider’s home race in Misano. This move came as a shock as everyone expected the Italian to retire from the sport at the end of the season. Instead the rider chose to take a step away from the sport after his home grand prix weekend.

It was at that same event last season that Andrea Dovizioso  made his return to MotoGP, initially on a year-old Petronas Yamaha before switching to the latest factory-spec M1 for the revamped RNF team. The Italian had fond memories of the Yamaha from an impressive 2012 campaign at Tech3, while the current M1 leads the standings with Fabio Quartararo.

At the end, after 20 years, it’s always tough to take this kind of decision. But it’s OK, I’m relaxed and it’s the right moment to take this decision,” he said.

“As a rider, when you are not able to be where you want, your mind starts thinking about these things. And with that I started thinking that Misano would be the right final race. To do my last home race and finish there with a party and a big smile from my friends and all the fans,” he continued.

Having competed in the MotoGP World Championship  for two decades, Andrea Dovizioso has amassed a total of 24 race victories and 103 podiums so far. It will truly be an emotional scene for the Italian rider when he finally finishes his last grand prix in front of his fans back at home.
