In the world of motorsports, there will be many instances where an animal or bird invades the race track. MotoGP rider Andrea Iannone was involved in one such incident. Half of the time, the bird/animal manages to get out safely. The other half is not so pleasant, as the living being is not able to make it out alive. The most recent incident took place at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix where Max Verstappen encountered a giant lizard on the track.
Back in 2015, the Australian round of the MotoGP world championship had a twist in it when a seagull invaded the track and failed to get out alive. This horrific incident took place during lap two of the GP at Phillip Island. When race leader Andrea Iannone took a corner, the bird was sitting in the middle of the track. When the bikes approached, they tried to fly away but ended up colliding with Andrea instead.
In an interview, Andrea talks about this incident. “The seagull wait on me for the kiss, but I told him wait on me before the race, not the second lap,” he joked.“It is difficult but it is better him fly before I arrive because I would clip him with the front tyre and for sure I would go down,” he stated. After his collision, it was later revealed as to how big of an impact it had in terms of damage to the bike.

After his lap two incident with the seagull, Andrea Iannone finished on the podium of the Australian MotoGP round. Meanwhile, Honda’s Marc Marquez managed to win the race after overtaking Jorge Lorenzo on the last lap of the race after a grueling battle. The race itself took place on October 18, 2015. The video of that incident recently resurfaced on X (Formerly Twitter).
As of the 2023 MotoGP season, Ducati’s Pecco Bagnaia leads the championship, while Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi play catch-up. Fabio Quartararo and Marc Marquez have their own issues to deal with when it comes to their respective manufacturers. With the MotoGP circus coming to India, there are talks of the speed record being broken at this track. It will be interesting to see what happens.
