Naomi Osaka has been in the limelight this week at Wimbledon as she continues to showcase her varied fashion walk-ons at the All England Club. The Japanese star made spectacular entrances at the Australian Open and the French Open this season and has not been limited by Wimbledon’s strict all-white dress code. She’s yet to display her fashion style outside Grand Slam events.

In her opening match, she wore a “Kill Bill”- inspired Kimono creation embroidered with cranes and cherry blossoms. In her second match, she wore a sweeping layers outfit, which was replaced by a cleaner silhouette featuring a traditional slash, a flowing train, and a bomber jacket embroidered with flowers. The crowd and photographers crowded around her during the five-minute walk out.

She wasted no time beating Romanian qualifier Anastasia Gasanova 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour on Court 2. On Friday (July 3), she blasted 25 winners to dispatch Austrian Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-3 to reach the round of 16 of Wimbledon for the first time in her career, despite not being pleased with her first-set performance.

However, as Osaka has progressed through the draw at Wimbledon, she has grown in influence. She played her opening match on Court 3 on Monday (June 29), was moved to Court 2 for her second-round match, and then to Court 1 for her third-round win over Kasatkina. Her fourth-round match will be against Aryna Sabalenka, and it will be on the Center Court.

Osaka’s influence in Wimbledon has been extraordinary, and that has been acknowledged by fans and pundits. Nonetheless, it has mostly shown in her excellent fashion style. During her press conference, she was asked whether she would take her outfit style to other tournaments outside Grand Slams:

I mean, I feel like I do little moments, like cute little detailed oriented moments in the other tournaments. I think that… but do you guys want me to pull up to the Cincinnati [Open] in a ball gown?

In advancing to the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time, Osaka has now recorded significant progress in her game over the past two weeks. She reached the final of the Bad Homburg Open last week before retiring against Karolina Muchova, and she’s yet to drop a set at the All England Club.

Naomi Osaka gives the reason behind her impressive performance on grass this season

Naomi Osaka was known as a hard-court player before going on maternity leave. She had conquered the Australian Open and the US Open on multiple occasions, but was not known for playing her best tennis on clay and grass. But in recent months, she has impressively improved her game on the natural surfaces on tour.

She reached the fourth round of the French Open last month, a significant run that solidified her place in the top 20. The former World No.1 has now had another amazing run at Wimbledon. During the aforementioned press conference, she opened up about what has been the defining drive behind her success on grass this season:

Obviously, I am performing very well on grass this year. My confidence is very high at the moment. I know how my game on grass is; I approach matches with a very stable mindset, no matter who the opponent is. That day I thought I had lost, but that I was moving like before. I could talk for hours about my clothes.

Osaka will take on Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round of Wimbledon. It will be their fifth meeting on tour, with Sabalenka leading 3-1 in their head-to-head record. Osaka won their first meeting back in 2018, but Sabalenka has won their last three clashes, including the 2026 French Open round-of-16 tie.
