Ross Chastain is one of the craziest cup drivers on the grid. Chastain secured a season finale entry by destroying his car in a desperate move. He drove full throttle in the final lap and leaped from P10 to P5, riding on the outside wall. This was enough to earn him a championship four entry over JGR rival Denny Hamlin.
The Trackhouse Racing No:1 Camaro ZL1 driver had to finish close to Denny Hamlin, riding in the top 5, to ensure progression. Chastain could only pass two drivers when the race came to the final lap. Chastain stepped on the gas on the straightway after turn two and went straight into the wall on turn 3. He kept his put on the pedal and drove along the wall to finish in the top 5.
In his post-race interview, he borrowed the move from his brother, who used it beat him in a video game back in 2006. He said, “I think the first time I ever saw a race car do that was on the Gamecube 2005 console. I don’t know if anybody else had those, but we did, and my brother Chad beat me doing it at the [fake] Dodge Raceway somewhere,”.
Ross Chastain was awarded the P4 finish, after Brad Keselowski was disqualified from the top 5. The RFK Racing driver failed the post-race inspection. Christopher Bell secured the season finale spot by winning the race, while his teammate Hamlin who led the most laps on Sunday, failed to finish the race high enough.
How NASCAR Twitter reacted to Ross Chastain’s video Game move
NASCAR twitter was split on Chastain’s move. Some fans quickly praised the ingenuity and guts shown by the Trackhouse Racing driver. They applauded the win-at-any-cost mentality of Chastain. Some were critical of the recklessness offered by the driver.
