Since the start of the Next-Gen era, the playoff format has been getting criticized the more than ever. As the competition grew strong, winning clutch races become earned the racers championship over season-long consistency. Many used this factor as a reason to call out Joey Logano, who won two Cups in this era, but his rival Alex Bowman got it back.
The Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman recently addressed the rise of questions over credibility of Joey Logano’s championship victory. It came after the No:22 Ford driver recently slammed drivers for criticizing the format, declaring the comments are product of their failure to win under the new format.
Bowman talking about the drama, asserted that while he understands the complaints from the racing community, about playoffs, it doesn’t give them the right to question Bill France Cup winners. He believes it the final result that matter and there is no difference in legitimacy of a champion once format changes.
But at the same time, I get why we have the playoffs. And I don’t think having the playoffs makes the champion any less legitimate than a full season format or a different format. I just think I would rather have the full season format.
Alex Bowman said SpeedFreaks show.
The No:48 HMS Chevy driver declared that it’s unfair for individuals to claim that Joey Logano took advantage of the format and won the title, in order to overlook his success. He admitted that in all three season Logano won the title, he was arguably the best racer in the playoffs and the one everyone wanted to beat.
I’ve seen people that try to say that like Joey’s taking advantage of it, right? Because he struggled throughout the year last year, got one win, and then kicked all our asses in the playoffs.
Alex Bowman added.
The fact that Joey Logano raced and won in format, where every elite racer had the equal chance to win the championships. He raced under the same rule as everyone else, and the fact that he got the most success doesn’t make it illegitimate. The Ford veteran deserved the credit for delivering at the right time while everyone else failed.
That doesn’t make him an illegitimate champion. He has the system that we all have to work with, and he worked with it better than the rest of us. I don’t think that makes it illegitimate.
Alex Bowman asserted.
Alex Bowman wants full-season points championship format
Though Alex Bowman is okay with the championship format, he like many of the critics wants a change. The veteran racer admitted that he wants the 36-race format’s return, something Hall of Famer Mark Martin has been calling for many years. The nostalgia factor also makes him a fan of the old legacy format.

As far as what would I change, I’m a 36 week points structure type of guy. That’s what I grew up watching. That’s what I like the most. I think that’s what rewards the entire body of work the most.
Alex Bowman said.
While NASCAR is looking inti changing the format, reports suggest that a return to the full-season points system isn’t on the table, owing to the influence of the broadcasters. The playoffs would be changed to increase the sample size of the finale, while keeping the entertainment factor alive.
