Since he made the team to field cars for himself in 1969, Richard Childress has been the rock of RCR. He led the team through the peak years of Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s championship run, Kevin Harvick’s dominance and now the new ear of Austin Dillon & Kyle Busch. But unlike in the past, his grandsons are more involved in team, causing some tension.

Following his win at Richmond Raceway win this Sunday, Austin Dillon shared his thoughts on his role in the team, that has been growing the years into management, alongside being the drivers. He is the one expected to inherit the team leadership when Richard Childress moves on. He admitted that he and his grandfather get into arguments over decisions on direction of the team.

We get into arguments to the point of frustration. It’s very hard when he’s your grandfather to have an argument with him because you don’t want to argue about it. There’s certain directions we have to go to move this boat forward, right?

The No:3 Chevy driver always pushes the Hall of Fame team owner on decision that needs to be made regarding the future of the team. His brother Ty Dillon, who races for Kaulig Racing, is also act9ively involved in the management of the team. Their involvement helps the legend to take pressure from his shoulders.

I’m constantly pushing him. My brother has stepped in now and trying to help as well. Between the two of us, we want to try to take some of the load off of him as we go.

Austin Dillon claims Richard Childress is ‘very loyal to a fault’

But it isn’t easy for the Dillon brothers to help their grandfather Richard Childress. It is because of the fact that the former racer is some that is very loyal to a fault and some that wants to take care of everyone around him. This makes it really hard to make big changes within the team as the brother have to push more.

Yeah, but he’s very loyal to a fault almost. He really takes great care of those that are around him. We just push him to try and make change at some point in time.

Further talking about the point, he highlighted how it takes Childress weeks to understand what they are selling with the advices for changes and how the veteran comes back to them admitting it’s a great idea.  But it is something the brothers love, as it shows despite being a stubborn old man, he is open to ideas that could change the team for the better,

He usually has a way about it where you tell him one thing and he’s going to get upset about it. Then two weeks later turn around, What do you think about this? That’s a great idea, man (smiling). I love that.

Austin Dillon added.

Regardless of how impressive Childress has been as a team owner over the years, the time has come for a change to the leadership. They are no longer the top tier team they once where, and has found themselves in a situation where even having Kyle Busch in the car isn’t getting them any Cup Series race wins.

He should give more responsibility to the Dillon brothers, who have grown up around NASCAR and understand bother racing as well as the managing side of the sport. It would be interesting to see how Richard Childress Racing furore is going to playout.
