Austin Dillon has finally silenced haters after winning at Richmond Raceway for the second time in a row. This time, however, the RCR driver left no room for doubt as he kept it clean for the entirety of the race. Nevertheless, there are still critics pointing out that Dillon remains a ‘nepo kid’ in NASCAR. The 35-year-old has now hit back at such comments.

Dillon races for Richard Childress Racing in the Cup Series. The team is run by his grandfather Richard Childress. While Austin Dillon did get his break into the championship due to his grandfather, his on-track results do prove that he is capable of competing in NASCAR. Though, as is the case in the world of sports, no one forgets such a nepo tag no matter how good a sportsperson does.

After winning in Richmond, Austin Dillon accepted that critics will continue to bring up this connection no matter what he does. The 35-year-old joked that even if he won 50 races, he would still hear such remarks.

Though, Dillon accepted that it was because of Richard Childress that he even got a shot in the Cup Series. The RCR driver was happy to get this opportunity from his grandfather. Now, he hoped that he was finally paying off the investment with his results on-track.

They’re going to do it either way. I could win 50 races, and they’ll say my grandpa gave me the ride. They’re not wrong. He did. He did a great job putting me in it. Hopefully I’m paying off on his investment at some point (smiling).

Austin Dillon grateful for passionate fanbase

Dillon has now finally secured a spot in the Playoffs for this season. Last year, NASCAR stopped him from qualifying for the business end of the tournament due to his last lap incidents in Richmond. However, this time, no one can stop him. This further energized the RCR driver, who pointed out that he has a loyal fanbase in the sport.

Austin Dillon was asked whether he was given credit for his driving in NASCAR amid the nepo label. The 35-year-old insisted that he has a group of passionate fans who do cheer for him every weekend. Dillon was happy to sign autographs for his loyal supporters who had been with him through thick and thin in NASCAR. He further asserted that no matter what happens next, he was never going to give up and go away from the championship.

I think I get the credit I deserve, man. I have some great fans out there. It’s cool when I go out and sign autographs. I have some loyal fans because they’ve had to go through a struggle at times. We’re kind of like a fighter. We don’t go away. I think a lot of people think that guy is going to go away at some point.

Certainly, Austin Dillon is rejuvenated after winning in Richmond. The victory marks a major achievement for the 35-year-old who has put an end to last year’s controversies for good. Now, the RCR has complete focus onto the Playoffs. While the Playoffs will not be easy, Dillon could become a spoilsport for some big names.
