Coming into this weekend’s race at Charlotte Roval, Bubba Wallace was in a must-win situation. He failed to secure the win, as expected, considering he has never produced an above average run-in road courses compared to his teammate Tyler Reddick. The results made him to admit he and his boss Denny Hamlin are massive disappointments in non-oval tracks.
On his post-race interview, the No:23 Toyota Camry driver Bubba Wallace pointed out that he has always found himself in a loop regarding tier wear, just like his boss Denny Hamlin. He highlighted he and the JGR veteran are pretty solid when it comes to tier degradation in ovals, but when it comes to road courses they are need even close to the front runners in this aspect.
Just was thrown for a loop with this tire, and it is funny to look at myself and Denny (Hamlin) and a couple others at the short tracks, when tires degrade, we are pretty good at being able to save tire.
Bubba Wallace said after Roval Cup race (NASCAR on YouTube).
The veteran admitted that he, just like his Toyota teammate Denny Hamlin, s**k on road courses when it comes to racing upfront and saving the tier. This leaves his more frustrated than majority of the Cup grid after Sunday’s Charlotte race.
Him and I both s**k on road courses and we can’t save tires on road courses. It is just frustrating. Frustrated at self, just knowing what was on the line, and didn’t produce.
Bubba Wallace added.
Comparing their past performance, Wallace is the worst RC racers of the two, as he only got into finishing inside the top-15 on road courses. Denny Hamlin is more capable of finishing inside the top-10 than his 23XI driver, but when the JGR veterans results in road course compared to his Oval form, it’s as bad as Wallace’s.
Bubba Wallace explains how frustrating the results were
Talking in the same post-race interview, he admitted that the overall results on Sunday and in the R-12 are pretty frustrating for him. He believes his performance was as bad as how he performed a couple of years back.

It is just frustrating. It is back to how I was a couple of years ago. Frustrated at myself, just knowing what was on the line, and didn’t produce. But it wasn’t for a lack of effort.
Bubba Wallace said.
Despite the disappointment, he is thankful to Toyota and the whole 23XI Racing garage for giving him a solid car, helping him make it into the R-12. But still he is frustrated with going back home with nothing after coming with high hopes.
I appreciate everyone on this Toyota team for pushing hard. This one s**ks worse than last week for sure. I had high hopes coming in here, and it is what it is.
Bubba Wallace added.
One of the reasons behind Wallace’s frustration, would be Denny Hamlin himself. The 23XI driver was close to winning last weeks at Kansas, but with half a lap left, he got used up by his own boss. What’s more frustrating was the fact that both of them couldn’t win the race and Chevy’s Chase Elliott was the ultimate opportunist, securing a race win.
