Ex-Joe Gibbs Racing driver Carl Edwards is one of the most influential drivers of his generation and is someone the NASCAR fans really want to see return to racing among retired legends. His ending his career prematurely after losing the Cup championship chase is a significant reason behind this feeling within the fandom.
Recently he got an offer to make the Cup return, driving the No:5 Hendrick Motorsports car at Carlotte Motor Speedway for the Coke 600. Kyle Larson attempting the Indy 500 for the second time in two years, opened this opportunity. Carl Edwards has responded to this offer and admitted that he sees it as an honor. He admitted that he might crash out if he gets in one.

Actually, this is cool my friend sent me that and really it’s an honor. I mean he’s one of the fastest guys to ever drive one of these cars and for him to say that, I don’t know if he’s messing with me, I’m very likely to crash a car if I were to get in one right now.
Carl Edwards told Bob Pickrass.
He pointed out that It’s an interesting opportunity and he has to run some sim events before ever thinking about potentially driving the Next-Gen car. Edwards also revealed that he hasn’t had any official discussion with anyone regarding the No:5 car opportunity.
But that is kinda interesting, but I’d have to go run the sim or something like that and see if I can even get around North Wilkesboro. But nobody’s officially talked to me about it, no.
Carl Edwards added.
Carl Edwards is open to the Cup return
In the same conversations, Carl Edwards pointed out that his answer to the proposal is not a total know. He admitted that at the moment he can’t drive the No:5, as he has to drive a sim and check out i9f he is ready to be on the racetrack first.

No, it’s never a total no, I like options but I don’t know. I’d say, yeah, it’s no for now, but I’d drive a sim and check it out.
Carl Edwards said.
The comments from Carl Edwards are pretty straight forward and makes a lot of sense. It would be interesting to see if HMS can give Edwards what he wants to check if he is compatible with the car and convince him to race in the practice.
