Chase Elliott has emerged as one of the best drivers on the NASCAR grid this season, evident from his lead in the drivers’ standings. Elliott currently leads the table after scoring 726 points against William Byron, right behind him at 722. With just five races left in the regular cup season, the HMS star wants to hold onto his lead of the pack and head into the playoffs with a point advantage over his rivals.
The driver leading the standings ahead of the playoffs receives 15 bonus points ahead of the first race. Chase Elliott is already leading the pack and just needs to hold onto his position if he wants to ensure having the lead before the playoffs even begin. As such, the 29-year-old opens up on having an advantage in his hunt for his second Cup championship in NASCAR.
Chase Elliott reckons that achieving the 15-point lead would be ‘huge’ as he wouldn’t mind having an early lead while contending for the championship. Elliott pointed out that he had been on both sides of the coin, as there were seasons when he had not many points in the playoffs, while in some seasons he had a bunch of points. The 29-year-old has tasted championship victory once and wouldn’t mind winning yet another in his career.
They’d be huge for sure, I’ve been on both sides of the coin there. We’ve been (in) years where we have not had many playoff points and I’ve had a couple years where we’ve had a bunch.
Chase Elliott said, as reported by speedwaymedia.com.
Chase Elliott declared that his life would get much easier in the championship battle if he had a lot of points available early on. Elliott believes that having the 15-point advantage is definitely the right way to go about it in the playoffs. The #9 driver anticipates that there will be a lot of things out of his control during the playoffs, as having the points would help him have something to fall back on. As such, the 29-year-old wants to score all the points possible in the regular cup series ahead of the round of 16.
I promise, it is a lot easier when you have a lot in the bank. That’s a much better way to go about it. The way the system is, with so many things kind of being out of your control, it’s nice to have something to fall back on. So of course, yeah, we want it all.

Chase Elliott proposes changes to NASCAR’s playoff format despite leading the table
NASCAR’s current playoff format, featuring 16 drivers fighting in an elimination style, has remained the same since the 2014 season. Despite continuous backlash and negativity towards the format, the sport has not made significant changes to it. Chase Elliott joins the many critics of the current format as he proposes some changes to make the championship more interesting and enjoyable for fans and drivers alike.

Chase Elliott reckoned that NASCAR would be just fine if the sport went through a full season with races granting points and no playoff battle in the end. This meant that drivers leading the table at the end of the regular Cup Season would win the title without the need of a one-race, winner-takes-it-all style. Elliott pointed out that even if a driver dominated the entire season and won the title with realistically no challenge, it would still be interesting to witness.
The system would be just fine if you just had a full season (and no playoffs), And if somebody runs away with it, so what? Let’s celebrate the fact that somebody ran away with it, that somebody was just that good.
Chase Elliott said in an interview with Jeff Gluck, @jeff_gluck/X.
For the 2025 season, the drivers and teams will have to go ahead with the traditional playoff format for the championship. Chase Elliott remains the favorite to win the championship if he manages to keep up with his impressive performances. Time will tell about how the HMS star fares against the massive hopes banked in him by the team and the fans.
