Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Christopher Bell had one of the biggest crashes of his career this year at Michigan and since then has been struggling from a wrist injury. He raced through the pain in the last couple weeks and after finishing outside the top-25 for two weeks, he made a comeback with a P5 finish last Sunday at Sonoma.

Coming into Chicagoland this Sunday with momentum back on his side, the No:20 Toyota Camry driver gave an update on his recovery. He admitted that he isn’t fully fit, but the pain isn’t as significant challenge as it used to be. The JGR driver does have issues regarding being quick and precise in terms of race craft.

I mean, the pain level has been low ever since the beginning but I would say my ability to drive the car is the same as what it has been. I just keep using the word clunky. I just can’t be quick and precise with the wheel.

Christopher Bell said ahead of Chicagoland race.

Further talking about the point, Christopher Bell asserted that he has been racing with either a cast or splinter in the car since the wreck. He will race this weekend with the splinter, as the race is expected to be less aggressive but will go back using cast for the Atalanta race week as the Superspeedway race is going to be really competitive.

I had a cast in my car, and now the splint, but my mobility is the same. So hopefully I can regain movement of my left wrist here shortly and get back to normal… I think we’re going to take a step backwards and go back to a cast for Atlanta just with the nature of the beast there and make sure that I have the maximum protection that I can have.

Christopher Bell added, as reported via motorsport.com.

Christopher Bell is super confident about having a solid race at Chicagoland

The Joe Gibbs Racing veteran later talked about the support he got from his crew during the difficult period. He admitted that missing out on good point finishes at Pocono and San Diego was really depressing for the whole No:20 team, as they are now closer to the cut-line, but they kept working hard.

I’m super proud of it and my team for persevering. Obviously, this has been a trying time with us and it was depressing after Michigan and then Pocono and San Diego, seeing those points slip away and us get closer to the (Chase for the Championship) cut line.

Christopher Bell said.

The team’s effort paid off last week at Sonoma where the racer took advantage of the JGR Toyota’s extra pace to secure top-5 finish. This helped them to earned more points and gave them hope for this weekend’s race at Chicago.

So, it was rewarding to get a lot of points and have a great solid finish and we’re looking forward to what’s next and there’s no reason that we can’t have another great points day here in Chicago.

Christopher Bell added.

He has to keep the momentum on and try to finish at least inside the top-10, as winning with the injury would be a long-shot for Bell. It would be interesting to see how he is going to perform this Sunday in the first oval race since Pocono.
