Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar gave the fans one of the most entertaining shows in NASCAR in a long-time, after the duo threw punches at each other following the Bristol race. The brawl was the result of the stage three wreck involving the two that ruined the championship hopes of the No:12 Ford Mustang driver.
Many in the racing community has been patiently waiting to see if the sanctioning body is going to penalize the driver for the drama and now NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell, in the appearance on Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour podcast, confirmed that there is no fine this time. They want driver to handle their own drama and is okay with them showing passion.
If drivers are going to handle their own business, the way we looked at that, how it played out, we’re not going to encourage fighting, but what we are going to encourage is passion, right.
Steve O’Donnell said.
Furthermore, the veteran official pointed out that though he doesn’t condone drivers fighting, he is okay with the fact that the likes of Ryan Blaney are showing their real passion. At the end of the day NASCAR need similar drama to sell their products more to the casual fans.
And those are two guys — Blaney’s showing his passion, showing his fire. So no, there’s nothing coming from us in terms of [penalties]. We’ll obviously watch what happens the rest of the way, but nothing in terms of post-race penalties.
Steve O’Donnell added via Happy Hour podcast.
Also, O’Donnell is happy the drivers are settling their scores outside the car and not it is like the infamous Brad Keselowski-Carl Edwards saga. Not causing wrecks saves the sport, the teams millions and at the same time gives more story lines to follow.
Don’t use your car as a weapon so to speak, right. We know, Brad Keselowski and the incident at Talladega with Carl Edwards, those types of things. We don’t want to see that.
Steve O’Donnell asserted.
Steve O’Donnell is sticking to the standard he set six weeks ago over Carson Hocevar fight
The veteran sport is official deserves credit for sticking to the standard he has set two months ago, when he shared NASCAR penalty policy. He admitted that they were giving out too much fines and it needed to be halted. The only thing the sport cares about is though the fact that the crew members getting involves.

We went through an era where, you know, too many fines. We’re fining everybody. But what happened was if you go on down pit road right now, a lot of guys look like you big dudes, right? And some of our drivers aren’t that big. Guys were getting in fights, and the crew guys were piling on. Yeah. It got a little dangerous. So, where we’re at is if the drivers want to handle their business. Great. When the crew guys start piling on that’s, that’s when we got a challenge.
Steve O’Donnell said.
During the fight, Spire Motorsports crew got involved and that helped the driver to get more punches on Blaney. There needs to be some restriction on how much the crew, most of whom are former NCAA and NFL athletes, are allowed to get involved as there are chance of potential injury.
