The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season so far has witnessed Spire Motorsports’ Carson Hocevar establishing himself as the future superstar the sport should bank on while also making enemies in the garage left and right. His over-aggressive racing style and nonchalant attitude have turned a lot of drivers and personals against him.

Hall of Famer Dale Jarrett talked about this drama and the what is holding the star driver back during his appearance on the 41st Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner. He highlighted how it takes more than just talent to thrive in the sport and the not so good decision making is holding the No:77 Chevy driver back.

Well, I don’t know about all the antics. I love his driving style…I like what he does for the sport. I think that some better decision-making will make him a tremendous star, not only with the fans, but when you look at the point standings each and every week. He has the talent to be a real star in this. It takes more than just the talent, though. You obviously have to have a good team; he has that. They’re getting better as a young team, but you also have to change your decision-making.

Dale Jarrett said about the Spire racer.

Right now, Carson Hocevar has the mind-set of going all out regardless of the moment and that’s not the right way to make decisions according to Dale Jarrett. The Bristol clash that ruined Ryan Blaney’s championship momentum was the final straw for many in the garage over the Spire driver and it should’ve been avoided.

Every single move can’t be made with the idea that, okay, I’m gonna … go for broke. You can’t have that decision-making in every race. There’s some times that, yes, it warrants that, and you need to do it, but not all the time…I think he’s lost trust from a lot of drivers out there. [Before] Bristol a few weeks ago, none of his run-ins had been with the higher echelon in the sport, one of the top five drivers in a critical situation in the Chase race.

Right now, a significant group of driver’s int the garage sees it as fair game to be aggressive with Hocevar and is looking for opportunities to have payback. Jarrett highlighted that the revenge most often won’t be wrecks, the racers would find ways to make the young racers like miserable on the track.

And so, I think that everyone’s kind of had enough of that right now. I think he’s gonna be receiving some of the payback. It might not be that they’re gonna wreck him, they’re just gonna make his life miserable on the racetrack. And you’ve gotta have that cooperation from your fellow drivers at some point in time.

Dale Jarrett asserted.

Dale Jarrett wants Carson Hocevar to learn from his dad Ned Jarrett

Later in the same conversation, the veteran highlighted that the Chevy driver should take some notes from his father Ned Jarett, the former champion who was nicknamed “Gentleman Ned” as the whole garage respected him for being a fair driver. Taking some inspiration from the former champions will help Hocevar in the long-run.

My dad, in a short period of time in the Cup Series, won 50 races, two championships in the 60s, and had a lot of wins. He did it with aggressiveness at the right time. But he also had huge respect for the people…But that word, respect, is something that has to get back into Hocevar’s mindset a little bit. My dad was one of the best at doing that and not making everyone mad. Getting a nickname ‘gentleman,’ that’s hard to live up to.

Dale Jarrett said.

Hocevar can never be the gentleman racer Jarrett was, and he never should try to be, as that’s not the brad he has made for himself. He should take inspiration from the likes of Dale Earnhardt, Tony Stewart and Joey Logano, who took aggression to a next level while also being respectful. That might help him to win the championships he is capable of.
