The NASCAR Cup Series unofficial season opener at Bowman Gray Stadium amidst snowstorm was a wild event. One of the highlights of the day was the run-ins between ex-teammates Shane van Gisbergen and Daniel Suarez. Their post-race reaction to the incident raised some eyebrows as well.
Daniel Suarez ended his long partnership with Trackhouse Racing to join Spire Motorsports, as Justin Marks’ team decided to replace the Mexican with young Connor Zilisch. The road course dominance of Shane van Gisbergen played a role in decision and there seems to some silent enmity within Suarez’s mind, which was evident in his aggressive racing as well as radio rant.
I’m going to kick his f*cking ass. Tell 97 I’m coming for him.

When asked about the reason for his outburst after the race, Daniel Suarez insisted that he isn’t the only one to blame. The Chevy driver asserted that he races people the way they race him, and SVG seems to have raced the No:7 car with hate.
I race people the same way they race me. I love everyone. If they give me love, I give them love. If they give me hate, I give hate.

The Spire driver highlighted how the Kiwi racer crossed the line with his moves on multiple occasions and how he pushed back in retaliation. The veteran racer insisted that such moves and incidents are part of racing.
We know where is the line. He did a couple of things that I didn’t like. I pushed him a couple of times as well, but he did it a couple more than what I did, so that’s part of it.

Spire Motorsports wants to give Daniel Suarez the redemption moment
Daniel Suarez, despite the clashes, ended the day with a solid P4 finish and proved that he is in a strong spot to earn the redemption he has been seeking for a long-time. Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson is confident that his team is capable of giving Daniel Suarez that opportunity.

It’s just the thing where I think we need each other. I think all of us love a good story of redemption and giving people a platform to prove doubters wrong.
Jeff Dickerson said.
The team cherishes the opportunity to give Saurez the opportunity to prove people wrong. He believes that the ex-Trackhouse racer will prove 2025 was just an outlier year for him and will prove his worth in the No:7 Chevy.
And so, I think in this case, Daniel needs to show everybody that this year was an outlier, and we want to show everybody that the 7 car’s performance this year was an outlier as well.
Jeff Dickerson added.
These comments from the racer and the team owner shows there is significant pressure to perform on him. If he fails in the 2026 season, then serious question will arise regarding Suarez’s stature as a driver that is worth a full-time seat in the top tier.
