Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin one of the biggest nightmares of his racing career last Sunday at Iowa. He came into the weekend with break issue, owing to defective pads and the team was denied the opportunity to change them overnight, because they are single source parts. The argument was the changing it would give them a competitive advantage.

The TRD veteran admitted after the race that he had the worst mindset he has ever had coming to the weekend and pointed out that he felt beat, even before the race start. NASCAR not budging at in in a situation that demanded the use of common sense over the rule interpretation, clearly disappointed the veteran and if not for him salvaging the day with a P5 finish mainly due to his driving prowess, they criticism would’ve been louder.

This is the worst mindset I’ve had going into a race that I can remember. I’ve never felt beat before I started ever, and I knew I was done. Just knew, yeah, it was a chance that it could have been fixed, but I knew all the facts…. I knew that you still got the same components; it’s not gonna be fixed.

Further talking about the challenge later, Denny Hamlin admitted that if he has to go through the same challenges as he did at Iowa consistently in the remaining 13 races of the season, he will just retire before 2027. At the end of the day, if the team hadn’t stepped up for him during the race, the result should’ve been much worse.

Yeah, I’d retire at the end of the year if I had to do that every week, that’s for sure. Lesson learned on our part, that obviously we got in a box that we weren’t allowed to get out of. We just had to grind away the best we could. I’m really proud of the team for the effort they put in today.

Denny Hamlin asserted.

Earlier in the same conversation, Hamlin highlighted how they switched the goals after the set back at the start of the race and had to re-invent his whole plan for the race. He was looking to finish at top-25 till the end of stage two, where he realises the No:11 has the opportunity to make it into the Top-10.

And so, I felt really down about the day, and obviously I switched my goals to, okay, if I don’t have any brakes, I think that if I can get some cars to wreck, stay on the lead lap, somehow, I can finish in the top 25, and that honestly was the goal.

Denny Hamlin said.

His crew deserves major credit for the success, as they didn’t give up and continued to work on the car making it better. They gave him something good enough to drive around and that’s all someone as talented as Hamlin needs to secure a good point paying day.

And the team just kept working on the car to adapt it to not having the stopping power, so it allowed me to manipulate the car a little bit differently…It wasn’t the fastest thing, but it was something I could at least drive and work with. The credit goes to the entire team for giving me something at least that I could drive.

Denny Hamlin added.

The comments from the veteran are on point and shows how 2026 might be season he wins the championship he has been chasing for two decades, as he is overcoming challenges better than he has ever done. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star driver in the coming races.
