One of the most dramatic moments from this Sundays’ Enjoy Illinois 600 at Gateway was the clash between ex-Cup champions Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson. The HMS driver during a an aggressive dual between the RCR driver, made contact with the No:8 Chevy’s left rear and it resulted in both of them ending up on the wall.
The clash ended up ruining the race of the two times Cup champion Kyle Busch as the damage to the car made him to DNF. Despite sliding into the No:8 Chevy, Kyle Larson was able to recover from the crash as he went onto finish P10 in the race.
According to JGR veteran Denny Hamlin it is Larson who is to blame for the incident. He pointed out that Larson pissed of Busch by sliding into him and slamming his left rear. So, Busch retaliated by dooring him and Larson sliding onto to him again caused the wreck.
It’s my opinion, but I think Larson pissed off Busch when he ran into his left rear trying to side draft…I think this is pretty accurate, he [Larson] pissed Kyle [Busch] off by running into him on the straightaway, Kyle then turned left while the 5 was beside him and wanted to show him, ‘Hey, dude, like that’s bulls***.’ And then they both crashed into the next corner. That was it. Busch’s day was over, and Larson ended up 10th. Busch got the bad end of that deal.Denny Hamlin said via Action Detrimental.
Denny Hamlin reckons the Kyle Larson move is an HMS strategy
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver went onto point out that the move made by Larson on Busch might be something HMS is teaching their drivers. He recalled Alex Bowman doing the same last week during the Coca-Cola 600.
And we see the side draft getting more and more — they’re getting closer and closer. Alex Bowman did the same thing last week at the Coke 600, like he ran into my left rear while he was trying to side draft. So, there’s clearly something going on there where they’re being taught to get closer and closer to the side of the car.Denny Hamlin said.
If it’s a strategy move from HMS Denny Hamlin pointed out, there are a lot of chance that similar incident like the Busch-Larson clash would happen in the future races. It would depend on how well drivers would respond to the move made on them.
