Hall of Fame owner of RCR, Richard Childress is one of the most unique characters of the sport. Over the years he has amassed success, folding cars for the likes of Dale Earnhardt and Kevin Harvick. His no-nonsense attitude and boldness make him standout from her peers. But the same factors have also put him in bad situations.

One such incident happened following the Homestead Miami Cup race. Joe Gibbs Racing convoy was leaving the track back to their race shop and to get back home faster used police escort. Veteran racer Denny Hamlin was part of the group and via his podcast, he revealed RCR boss Richard Childress tried to join the escort resulting in a road rage incident.

Richard Childress was not part of this escort. He was part of the vehicles that needed to move out of [the way]. The police got him to move out of the way. Well, somebody, within Joe Gibbs Racing [left] a gap, and Richard says, ‘Well, I’m joining this escort whether you guys like it or not.’ And he forced his way in. Well, this employee says, ‘No you can’t just join in,’ so he pulled up beside him.

Hamlin revealed how Childress hung left and destroyed the side of one of the JGR car. The No:11 TRD driver was witnessing the events live and couldn’t believe it happened. Childress might have done it because the he frustrated over his team’s poor weekend and getting stuck in the traffic might have made him more furious.

What did Richard Childress do? He hung a left, destroyed the side of the car. He did, he turned left, I witnessed, we were right behind it. I’m like, ‘Oh my god, did he just, he did.’ And I was like, ‘Jared pull up, pull up to the car.’ The right side of the JGR car was destroyed and Richard he just stayed in the gas. I mean, hung a left on them and just doored the s**t out of our car. I couldn’t believe it.

Denny Hamlin added.

Joe Gibbs Racing and Richard Childress hasn’t made any comments about the incident, as it seems they are looking to end any drama away from the public eyes. It would be interesting to see how all the drama is going to playout and will it affect the future of the sport.

Richard Childress set to field car for a third racer in 2025

Amidst all the drama, RCR is continuing their efforts to get back to winning form. Other than the controversial Richmond win from Austin Dillon last year, the team hasn’t produced any promising moments in two years.

One way they can make the team better is potentially signing new driver relacing Austin Dillon, who hasn’t delivered to the level of what a RCR driver should. Though there are some doubts, RCR’s Xfinity Series championship contender Austin Hill is their most promising talents.

Hill is now set to make five part-time appearances in the Cup series with the third car of RCR in the 2025 season. He will drive the No:33 Chevy at Darlington, them will also make starts at Chicago Street Course, Daytona, and playoff races at Bristol and Talladega.

I’ve enjoyed my starts in the Cup Series so far and the goal is to keep learning every time I climb into the car. We have been strategic with adding new tracks to the lineup each season, which allows me to gain valuable experience. Racing for Richard at any level is an honor, but especially in the Cup Series.

Austin Hill said.

These five races should act as the audition for the Cup future of Austin Hill, who has been racing in the Xfinity Series for a little more than many expected. It will be interesting to see if he will finale get a Cup chance in 2026 with RCR or should he have to move to another team.
