The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville last Sunday saw a record five-over-time restarts. Team Penske racing two times championship winning driver Joey Logano bagged the win taking advantage of the situation. It marked his place in the playoff in a season that has been underwhelming compared to the standard he has set for himself.

Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin discussed the impressive win of the leading Ford driver in his podcast Action Detrimental. He pointed out that Joey Logano has a lot of benefits with him running slow in the final runs and being outside the top-10 when the race was supposed to end that helped him to secure the win.

He had a lot of benefits, and this is one of the few benefits of running slow in the course of that last run. You’re just back there and he’s fighting for 15th or whatever, he was going to finish before this all happened.
Denny Hamlin said via Action Detrimental.

He asserted that the No:22 team did a great job saving fuel as they ran over 100 laps after final fuelling. Hamlin reckons the crew chief did good by asking Logano to save some fuel for the green-white checkers run.

You have to do a good job of saving as well. We don’t know if his crew chief gave him information throughout the race to say when they’re in the spot, hey save me some in case we got green-white checkers.

While further talking on the point, Hamlin pointed out that Joey Logano wasn’t the only team to save fuel till the end. But everything lined well for the champion driver to take the victory on Sunday against a stacked-up field.

…It doesn’t take much, and you can save a gallon or so pretty easily. Everyone’s fuel saves may be a little different under caution, so there’s ways that this happened, and it all just lined up perfectly for him.

Joey Logano and crew made their own luck at the end with good fuel strategy. That’s what yielded them the all-important win. It would be interesting to see how the season would playout for them as the season progresses.
