The NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta featured some wild moments and some intense radio rants involving the veterans of the sport. Incidents involving two times champion Kyle Busch and 2023 Champion Ryan Blaney were the highlights of the day. Spire Motorsports’ youngster Carson Hocevar was behind both dramas.
Kyle Busch was bumped by the No:77 Chevy of Carson Hocevar on the end of stage one, resulting the former threatening to wreck him. JGR veteran Denny Hamlin recalled the Busch clash and took a hilarious dig at his ex-teammate. He highlighted how the racers are more telephone tough guys and won’t follow through with threats to wreck each other.
We are telephone tough guys, no doubt about it. We will threaten over the radio anyone and everyone. ‘If he does this, I’m gonna send him over the fence,’ and then nothing ever happens.
Denny Hamlin said via Actions Detrimental podcast.
Further talking about the point, Hamlin pointed out that the drivers make the threats and radio rant to send a message to spotters or crew chief of other teams to leave them around. It seems to a be strategy to race more freely.
As a driver, when you’re saying that you’re trying — or at least I am, I don’t want to speak for everyone — you’re trying to send a message to either the crew chief or spotter on that driver’s team to hear you and then say, ‘Hey, be careful around Denny, he’s pretty pissed.’ That’s all you’re trying to do is get the message out to them.

Denny Hamlin defends aggressive Carson Hocevar amidst criticism
In the same podcast, the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran came to Carson Hocevar’s defense as he gets criticized for aggressive racing. He pointed out, while taking in the shoes of the Spire driver, that Hocevar was in the fight for the win and he didn’t have time judge his mistake at the moment on the track.

I’m going to be Carson, I’m going to say, ‘This is my very first win. This is one of my best shots I’ve ever had to win the race, and that was the move I thought would do it for me. ‘I’ll go back and look at it and see if I made a mistake, and if I did I’m going to learn from it and I’ll do better next time. But in that moment, I thought that that was my best move.’
Denny Hamlin said.
Though Hocevar was over aggressive in the race, he was in the top 3 at the end, proving he did what it takes to help his team succeed. He does have to clean his racing and control the aggressive style to more a of a reasonable limit in the coming races to have a solid future in the sport.
