The NASCAR Cup Series race at Gateway witnessed a heated duel between two of the biggest names of the sport in Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson. The former champions wrecked each other earlier in the race and ruined each other race. Busch had to DNF because of the damages, while Larson had to settle for a P10 finish.
The drama started when Kyle Larson attempted to pass Kyle Busch by side drafting and ended up making contact with his left rear. The RCR driver retaliated by door bumping the No:5 Chevy. Larson didn’t pull back and continued running the same line. This made his Camaro slide into Busch’s and eventually caused the wreck.
JGR veteran Denny Hamlin, while talking about the incident point figure at Kyle Larson and asserted that it was avoidable. He went onto highlight that how Busch’s emotional response from Larson’s move made things worse. The 23XI Racing co-owner pointed out that considering the unfortunate state his team is in, he should consider being less emotional.
Busch got the bad end of that deal…I heard [Busch] say they can’t afford days like this but in these instances, you just gotta keep your emotions somewhat in check.Denny Hamlin said via Action Detrimental.
Kyle Busch explains why the Kyle Larson incident is hurting him
The 2024 NASCAR Cup season so far has been a huge disappointment for Kyle Busch. He hasn’t been a contender for a win in none of the races this year and because of that every point he scores counts for him in playoff chase. Hence, he feels hurt by the Kyle Larson incident at Gateway.
He was on older tires and trying to get us for a spot. I’m not sure what that single point would mean for him, but it certainly hurt us a lot. It took that point away, as well as the others that we would get for the stage and then also the rest of the day. It’s very frustrating.Kyle Busch said at Gateway.
The RCR veteran will be hoping to redeem himself from the back-to-back disappointments in the coming weekends by building on the good performance his teammate Austin Dillon had on Sunday. It would be interesting to how soon Busch and team can get back to fighting for wins.
