“It’s at the top of the to-do list,” NASCAR legend Kyle Busch sets sight on winning Daytona 500 before retiring

Kyle Busch

A two-time Cup Series champion, 222 wins across NASCAR’s top three series, with 59 of those coming at the top-tier Cup level Kyle Busch has an impressive NASCAR resume to show for but it remains incomplete as he is yet to win the historical Daytona 500. The 2022 season will mark his 16 starts in Daytona.

Kyle Busch has won the July race at Daytona in 2008 and has also celebrated poles, topped exhibition events, and even won here in other series. But the ultimate prize at NASCAR’s ultimate track a win at “The Great American Race” still eluded him. Now Kyle Busch has expressed his opinion on potentially winning it in the future to Fox Sports.

Kyle Busch said that winning Daytona 500 remains top of his priorities, in top of his to-do list. He went on to say that a win in Daytona international speedway will be potentially there with his top races and championship wins. Kyle Busch adds that though there are lots of greats in NASCAR that failed to win the Daytona 500 he doesn’t want to be among them.

It’s at the top of the to-do list. That box has not yet been checked, so it’s the top one. I don’t think there’s anything else higher than that, not even close to as high as that,” Kyle Busch said.

When we check that box, where does it stack in regards to career accomplishments? I mean, it’s going to be near the top. I don’t know if it’s as much as the championship, but it’s going to be top-of-race wins for sure,” Kyle Busch explained.

It’s a big win, would love to be able to accomplish that. I don’t want to make excuses, but there are a lot of guys that have been greats in our sport that did not win that race. So, I would not like to go down as one of those guys. But we’ll work hard to make sure that doesn’t happen,” Kyle Busch added.

Kyle Busch went on to say that he had previously come so close to a win but circumstances were against him and said he hopes it will happen one day. He added that he has to dodge the weeks that will surely occur in the top to win the race one day.

“I’ve been in prime position to win it late in the race and just circumstances happen. I’ve been oh so close, really near the end of a run or end of the race, and just haven’t been able to get it done. It’ll happen when it happens. You can’t force it,” says Kyle Busch.

You can be running third and spin somebody and win. Or you can be running fourth and have the top three get caught up in a wreck and win. So really you just have to try to dodge the wreck at the end because we all know that’s inevitable. It’s going to happen,” Kyle Busch added.

It’s not all bad for Kyle Busch though as lots of his fellow grates have also either failed or took too long to win the Great American Race. It took David Pearson 15 tries to win the Daytona 500; Kyle’s big brother Kurt Busch had to fail 15 races before a win. Tony Stewart, Rusty Wallace, and Mark Martin retired without marking the glory. Even the 7-time Cup champion Dale Earnhardt had to race 20 times to secure a win.
