Spire Motorsports’ Carson Hocevar has been making a name for himself over the last two Cup Series seasons, as one future Superstars of the sport with his strong performances on the track alongside controversies he has been part of. The career path and attitude of the Chevy driver have been much different than anyone in the garage.
This has gotten then attention of ex-racer turned broadcaster Jamie McMurray and on his recent conversation of the Dale Jr. Download podcast, the veteran admitted that he is really jealous of the No:77 driver owing to the fact that he is having a lot of fun behind the car. He never got to experience that same on his racing days, as he was too much of perfectionist to care about fun.
The one thing that I am really jealous of with Carson Hocevar is that he has fun when he races. I could never, like when I got in a car, I just wanted to win, and I wanted to do everything perfect and right, and I never really relaxed and just enjoyed the moment. He seems to really enjoy everything he’s doing.
Jamie McMurray told Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Earlier in the same conversation, Jamie McMurray explained one issues he has with the aggressive racing side of Carson Hocevar. He admitted that the youngster is making too many enemies on the track that he has no one left that would cut him a break when he needs it the most. The veteran also highlighted how some of the youngsters’ fans are hating on him for these critical comments.
So, as I watch everything he’s doing, I’m like, you’re never going to get cut a break. The guy’s always going to stop short in his pit stall to block you in just a little bit…I think I used it, because I have a kid that races, and so I used it as like, ‘Well, this is what I would tell my son, Carter.’ I wouldn’t do that, and here’s why. And every time I would say that on TV, people would be like, the hatred for Carson Hocevar continues. I’m like, it has nothing to do with that.

Jamie McMurray calls Carson Hocevar a one of one talent despite the drama
In the same conversation, the racing legend pointed out that Hocevar is someone that the sport really needs at the moment, as his outspoken nature and unpredictability on the track make him an asset. But at the same time, he needs to stop making enemies.

Because the reality is I like Carson. I think he is exactly what NASCAR, the sport (needs). You want someone who’s willing to say just the random stuff he says… Stop fueling the fire because you can, and Denny said this, I believe: you can make one guy mad.
Jamie McMurray said.
He highlighted that it is okay to have beef with one or two drivers on the track, not all the racer on the Cup garage. At the same time McMurray is embracing the uniqueness of the youngster and asserted the Chevy driver is one of one in the garage.
Like if you want to make Corey Heim mad, that’s fine, but you can’t make everyone mad, or to me what we saw happen on Sunday where Carson’s just trying to get his lap back from the leader, you can’t have everybody against you. But what I have learned is that I should just embrace what he’s doing and just go with the flow on it. He’s one of one.
Jamie McMurray added.
The comments from the former Cup Series driver are on point and shows how the there are multiple nonces regarding controversies over Hocevar. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star driver in the coming years in Cup and if McMurray’s feeling about him will change.
