The NASCAR community was shocked when Martin Truex Jr. announced at Iowa that he will retire from full-time racing at the end of the 2024 season. Though fans knew the retirement was eminent and inevitable, they weren’t ready to see one of the most admired racers on the grid move away from the sport.

Ex-NASCAR driver Jeff Burton addressed the retirement while talking to NBC Sports and shared his view on it. He pointed out that being a NASCAR driver comes at a cost as the racers has to make the sport their first priority over their family. This deprives them from the opportunity to be the best father or the best husband.

He went on to assert that as the driver ages they will appreciate the time they get to spend with their loved ones more as the support from the family is really important for them. Burton asserted that Martin Truex Jr. is now seeing this side of life and that’s why he decided to finally call an end to his career.

That meant no matter what was going on if something, anything with race came up, that’s what I did. When you do that for a certain amount of time, when you’re young and you have partners that support you, that’s really important, then you just go do it. But as you age and you start seeing, you start to appreciate a little more of the things that you’re missing. I just think that’s where Martin is.

Jeff Burton claims being a racer is a massive sacrifice

I just don’t think the casual fan can understand how grueling of a lifestyle it is. Look, it’s not without reward. It’s not a pity party here. It’s not without reward, it’s not without good pay, it’s not without a lot of things that a lot of people would just be very envious of. But it is a massive sacrifice.
Jeff Burton said.

Martin Truex Jr. made the decision because he wants to enjoy his life more, explore new things and enjoy a slow-paced life. But that doesn’t mean he will 100% remove himself away from NASCAR as he will race part time in the Xfinity or selected cup events.
