The NASCAR community was shocked when it was announced that John Hunter Nemechek will exit Legacy Motor Club at the end of 2026 season despite the fact that he signed an extension earlier this year. LMC seems to have planned the replacement, as Josh Berry is reportedly set to join the team and they have already signed Riley Herbst to drive their third car set to debut next year.
There were some rumors after the announcement that a verbal clash with Jimmie Johnson, the co-owner of the team, was the reason for JHN’s exit. The seven times champion addressed the claims on his recent appearance on SiriusXM NASCAR radio. He asserted that there was no issue with the driver as rumored and the exit was the product of how the overall Cup landscape changed recently.
There wasn’t an incident or moment. We’re in pro sports, and as we look across the landscape for how we grow the company, and if you’re looking at a chessboard, two or three chess plays down the road, how you can make the most informed, smart decisions for the company. We have partners to think of, we have investors to think of.
Jimmie Johnson told SiriusXM NASCAR.
Further talking about the point, Jimmie Johnson asserted that the decision to end the contract with John Hunter Nemechek was a tough choice as he has been a good driver for them. He promised the JHN will get all the support he needs to succeed in the last ten races if the season, as they want the racer to find a long-term seat after the exit.
There was a scenario there that we needed to explore, and the decision was made — by no means an easy one. Our commitment to John Hunter and supporting him — I’m not sure other teams would behave the same way, but we want to do anything we can do to help him, but just from a long-term perspective, there are some other options or opportunities that we need to keep open.
Jimmie Johnson added, as reported via motorsport.com.
Jimmie Johnson and John Hunter Nemechek are laughing over the rumors
Later in the same conversation, Johnson revealed that how he and his driver laughed over the rumors of the confrontation as well as the supposed fist fight. He then reiterated how tough it was for him to let the driver go.

Not true. No. Actually, we were texting last night. I think one of those may suggest that we’d gotten into a fist fight, and we had a funny text exchange about that. So, none of that is true… You know, and really, as the owner of this company, I’ve not been in this situation, and it’s not easy, and I don’t want to be lighthearted about it.
Jimmie Johnson said.
He was a good driver for the team and will end his career with 108 races with Legacy MC. As a team owner Johnson has to make tough choices, he can’t always remain loyal to a driver when the garage offers him better alternatives and opportunities.
You know, it was a very difficult decision for us to make. John Hunter is someone that I believe in and care about. We live in a pro sports world, and you know, sometimes there are other factors in play that just have to be considered and thought about and that’s really the root of it all.
Jimmie Johnson added.
The comments from the veteran are on point and he is hoping that the risky decision is going to reward his team some solid results in the upcoming years. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star driver in the coming days.
