Racing drivers are incredibly passionate, especially when they’re making their way up the motorsport ladder. Even stars like Joey Logano are not afraid to break the rules sometimes just to chase their dream. The Team Penske driver recently revealed that as a young driver, he actually violated rules with a fake birth certificate.
Back when Logano was just 10 years old, he was trying to compete in a racing series. The championship had a minimum age requirement of 12 years. To get around this, Joey Logano and his father Tom Logano came up with an interesting solution.
The two decided to get in touch with an insider in the series, who would replace Logano’s real birth certificate with a fake one, allowing him to race. While this worked at first, the insider forgot to take out the original certificate, which ultimately led to Joey Logano being caught.
The Team Penske driver narrated the entire ordeal and its aftermath. After he was exposed, the entire field started talking about his age. At first Joey Logano simply lied to everyone, claiming that he was 12, but the game was over once his file was seen by the officials with two birth certificates.
So, the rumors started flying around. Like, ‘Hey, he’s not really 12. He’s only 10.’ I would just lie about it every time someone asked me. One day, someone looked in my file. Two birth certificates. No more fun.

Joey Logano repeated same lie in different series
While one would think that being caught red-handed would stop the Logano father-son duo from doing it again. After all, Joey Logano was forced out of the field, and had to wait for another attempt till he met the age requirement. However, as it turns out, the duo repeated the same trick yet again.

When Joey Logano turned 13, he was once again using the birth certificate trick to race in a championship meant for 15 years old. This time, he was unlucky and suffered a massive wreck. He was asked about his age when he was being transported in an ambulance. The Team Penske star told the medical officials his fake age. This made Tom Logano convinced that his son was okay after the incident.
They go, ‘How old are you?’ I go, ’15.’ My dad goes, ‘He’s fine.’ I was only 13. That was the moment he knew I was fine.
Joey Logano added.
This incident might seem like a funny story today. However, it is not acceptable. Joey Logano is a massive figure in NASCAR and this could potentially influence young racers into doing the same. One must remember that age restrictions are put in place for a reason. A driver below the required age might not be able to handle the cars in the championship or suffer the physical risks.
Thankfully, Joey Logano managed to go through without a safety risk to his life, but this should not have happened in the first place. Though, the NASCAR star now understands that such an act is quite dangerous.
