Legacy Motor Club made some huge announcements in the 2026 season, as they are going through some bog changes following the recent private investment in the team. They will have an entirely different driver line-up from 2027, as they have confirmed a new deal with Josh Berry to replace outgoing John Hunter Nemechek.
He will join Erik Jones and Riley Herbst in the newly expanded team. An opportunity for the deal opened up after Wood Brothers Racing decided to let Berry go, after securing the signature of prodigy Jesse Love. The veteran racer feels LMC is the exact organization that he can thrive in and is looking forward join them.
Legacy Motor Club is an organization that clearly has a vision for where they want to go, and I want to be part of that. I’ve had a chance to see this team up close and I know what they’re capable of. The way Jimmie [Johnson] has built this place — the people, the culture, the direction — it’s exactly the kind of environment I want to compete in.
Josh Berry said about the deal.
The co-owner/part-time driver of the team Jimmie Johnson shared his thoughts on the Josh Berry signing via a statement. He highlighted they have signed a proven racer with experience and wisdom. He is hoping that Berry continues to perform on the same level since he started auditioning for new seats and make a meaningful impact at LMC.
Josh is a proven competitor who has earned everything through hard work and getting his hands dirty. What stands out about Josh is his ability to manage the big picture behind the wheel — his experience, perspective and wisdom. His career has been built on that foundation, and I know he will have a meaningful impact here. We’re thrilled to have him at Legacy.
Jimmie Johnson asserted as reported by motorsport.com.
Denny Hamlin shared his thoughts on the Josh Berry deal
Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin shared his thoughts about Berry’s move to LMC, before it was officially confirmed, via his podcast. He asserted that the veteran has earned his new seat, though it came at the cost of John Huner Nemechek getting axed.

I believe it’s earned him a ride. You would say it’s well earned at this point. It appears it’s a done deal. But, yes, John Hunter, we thought he had a contract for next year, but Legacy wants to go in a different direction. My guess is they’re gonna buy him out of that and move on to do something different, and what it appears to be is a ride for Josh Berry.
Denny Hamlin said.
Further talking about the point, the veteran asserted that one thing that excites him about the move is the fact that LMC signed the inform driver. They replaced him with JHN, despite the fact that the latter had more visibility on the market.
It’s good to see that performance still does matter, and if you’re Legacy, you’ve got to take the next step to get better. And they feel like this will be for the best, assuming it’s Josh Berry. They feel like this is an upgrade for them. And we’ll see if that turns out to be true.
Denny Hamlin added.
The comments from the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran are on point and shows how much he respect the former SHR driver as a solid performer. It would be interesting to see how the new racing chapter is going to playout for star driver, and whether he can take advantage of potentially his last chance to build a legacy in Cup.
