The 2024 NASCAR Cup playoff started with some chaos at Atlanta Motor Speedway that saw Joey Logano securing the win and a R-12 berth. This garage is at Watkins Glen this weekends for the second race of R-16 and with Goodyear introducing new tiers with more fall-off for the race, it will be possibly be wild out there.
Ex-NASCAR Cup champion Kevin Harvick via his podcast made his prediction for the race weekend. He is banking on Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron to come out victorious. Harvick had made the similar choice last week for Atlanta, but he was wrong on many levels as he didn’t expect them to have such drama.
But he decided to go with Byron, despite the lack of success last time, owing to how good the youngster has been on the road courses in the Next-Gen era. Harvick feels the No:24 team is due to have a great run as they haven’t been on the same level as they were at the start of the 2024 season, that saw them winning thrice.
I went with William Byron this week. I should have waited a week. If I could go back and make all my changes after watching Atlanta, I would make different picks. But I’m gonna Willy B again this week because of his success on the road courses. I think he’s due to have a great run. They’ve had some OK runs but nothing great lately.Kevin Harvick said via Happy Hour podcast.
Kevin Harvick predicts Watkins Glen will be interesting race
While talking about the race on the same podcast, Kevin Harvick pointed out that it will be great event with tires being the different makers. He believes the good road course racer will have a real advantage on the race and that will make race really interesting.
They won’t have a lot of time to figure it out. But I think that, you know, you’re going to have your same guys that are good at the road courses, and it’s going to be interesting, because of all the scenarios that we had at Atlanta, as to who is that guy that steps up and is the outlier of speed at Watkins Glen. So, you know, I think it’ll be interesting.Kevin Harvick said.
The points made by Kevin Harvick are spot on and it won’t be unfair to expect an interesting race week this Sunday. Byron will have tough competition from the likes of Tyler Reddick and teammate Kyle Larson, while wildcards like Michael McDowell might make a difference as well.
