2017 Cup champion Martin Truex Jr. is having one of the disappointing seasons of his career with Jope Gibbs Racing, in the worst time possible.  He is retiring at the end of the season and is yet to taste a victory in his last season as a full-time driver. Though he made it into the playoffs on points, his results from the last two moths shows the veteran is in a downward spiral.

Martin Truex Jr. has secured just two top-1 finishes in the last 10 races of the season. All of his remaining finishes were P24 or worse with four finishes being outside the top-30. Over the last six events, his best result has been a P24. His start to the playoff was much worse with an early wreck earning him a P35 finish at Atlanta.

It’s unfortunate. You want to enjoy the end of your career, and the things that are happening, and he’s definitely cranky on the radio. That’s for sure, I don’t think that’s anything new. He’s definitely been cranky lately.
Kevin Harvick said on Hapy Hour podcast.

Denny Hamlin shares his verdict on Martin Truex Jr.’s performance

Martin Truex Jr.’s teammate Denny Hamlin also discussed the No:19 Toyota drivers’ performance slump. He pointed out that the JGR veteran have had tough time in the last few races with him getting caught in other people’s mess as it’s a bummer for them. But that doesn’t make him a less of threat as Hamlin proclaimed that MTJ is still can thrive.

So, tough on that No. 19 team, and I hate it for Martin, because, you know, he’s kind of getting caught up in some other people’s things, which is a bummer in your last year... Yes, he’s certainly capable of that. It’s historically been one of his best tracks. The Next Gen era hasn’t been quite as nice to him, but he’s a threat, absolutely a threat.
Denny Hamlin said.

The 2024 season isn’t still over for the star driver as he can still pull of some magic to secure wins to progress into the next-rounds. But to do that they have to be perfect with their execution and the driver should try race upfront, instead of places where he can get into others’ mess.
