Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson is all set to make history by becoming the first driver since Kurt Busch in 2014, to pull off the double duty. The HMS driver is expected to be in serious contention for the victory in the Indy 500 with Arrow McLaren, before flying back to Charllotte Motor Speedway for the Coco Cola 600.
The Double is one of the toughest races weekends a driver could have. They have to race 1100 miles combined in two different tracks, in two different championships. It will physically and mentally drain a driver. That’s why Tony Stewart, who is a both NASCAR and IndyCar champion, is the only one to finish both the race while attempting the double.
As recalled by 2014 Cup champion Kevin Harvick in his podcast, even the best, Tony Stewart failed to make a proper transition from Indy 500 to Coke 600. He has pointed out that Kyle Larson is in for a similar challenge. Racing in 500 miles and 600-mile races in the same day without a proper rest is huge challenge.
We saw Tony Stewart come back one year when he did his double. First thing he did was spin out. So, I mean he’s gonna have driven hopefully 500 miles in the Indy 500 and hop back over and that amount of time in the same day is, that’s a difficult transition.Kevin Harvick said via Happy Hour podcast.
Kevin Harvick expects troubles for Kyle Larson in Coco Cola 600
Harvick went on to point out that though he hast raced in the Indy 500 ever, he has seen enough t known that even the best would have troubles when they came back to NASCAR. He reckons Larson has meticulously planned everything so far.
Not that I’ve ever done it, but you know, I’ve seen the best of them have trouble with that as they come back to get in the car. So, super long day for Larson and everything that he has to do so he’s definitely, I’m sure gonna plan with everybody as to how he needs to take care of itself.Kevin Harvick said.
The ex-SHR driver does have a point about the struggles that Larson might face. But on the other hand, in terms of skill and capability Larson is on the same level or above Stewart. So it would be interesting to see if the HMS driver would prove Harvick wrong.
