NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick and his son Keelan are adored by fans. The 49-year-old’s passion for racing has been carried over by his son. So much so, that the two even go up against one another on track. During their latest face-off, it was the 12-year-old Keelan who managed to get the upper hand on the former Cup Series champion.

The Harvick father-son duo have competed in the CARS Tour race twice this year. On both occasions, it has been the 12-year-old prodigy who has outperformed his champion father. Kevin Harvick recently accepted that he lost for a second time in a row to Keelan fair and square in the Pro Late Model race. The round took place at Evergreen Speedy in the state of Washington.

During the race, Keelan Harvick finished in second place. Kevin Harvick reckoned that the drive was enough to catch his eye over his son’s incredible racing talent. The NASCAR legend pointed out that the 12-year-old had managed to outperform him on pure merit. This was the first time Harvick Sr. was able to get a good look at his son’s driving, as he was right behind Keelan the whole race. The 49-year-old was proud to see the way his son was able to place his car, with complete spatial awareness.

We didn’t crash anything. I did get beat by the 12-year-old.This time he just beat me. First time, he finished ahead of me. First time he finished ahead. This time, just start to finish just beat me. It’s the first time I’ve watched him in the car because I got to race behind him pretty much all day. It’s the first time I’ve watched him in the car, and I was like, ‘He’s confident.’ He knows how wide his car is, he’s comfortable sliding the car around.

Kevin Harvick glad to see Keelan improve so quickly

It might be surprising for fans to see a NASCAR champion be defeated by his 12-year-old son. But for Kevin Harvick, this moment is undoubtedly a good memory. While the 49-year-old is way past his prime, Keelan’s performances show that he can indeed carry forward the legacy of the Harvick name in NASCAR.

Kevin Harvick asserted that he was not disappointed to find himself loose out on-track. The NASCAR icon was aware that he had lost his mojo after retiring from the sport. Moreover, Harvick pointed out that the racing landscape has changed a lot over the years. Young drivers like Keelan are racing much more consistently with far more exposure than what the 49-year-old had during his junior career. This has allowed drivers like Keelan to learn and improve at a much quicker rate.

Hey, I’m all about it. I think it’s um, I’ve hid nothing about stepping out of the car and losing a step or two when you don’t do it every week, and the kids are good nowadays. Because they race so much, they’re exposed to so many more things than what we’re exposed to, and they as hell learn a lot faster.

Kevin Harvick stated

Certainly, Keelan Harvick has got his father’s racing DNA. The 12-year-old is still quite early in his career with a long way up in the motorsport ladder. Nevertheless, so far, he has shown incredible promise. With one of the best NASCAR drivers in history as his mentor, the future seems bright for Keelan. Though, there is still a lot more to prove for Harvick Jr.
