The NASCAR community was shocked when Stewart Haas Racing announced that they would cease the operations of their Cup team forever at the end of the 2024 season. They are on the way to sell their three charters and offload the majority of their workforce.
But this week it was revealed Gene Haas will keep one of the SHR charters and will operate as the Factory Haas Team, which will also continue to field two cars in the Xfinity Series. This has made former driver of the team Kevin Harvick to come up with some wild questions.
He pondered whether a spat between owners Tony Stewart and Gene Haas led to the end of the team. Harvick questioned if his friend Stewart was fed up with his lack of control over the competition side of the team and decided to finally call it quits. He gave examples of SHR failing to sign Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson as one such incident where Stewart’s authority was questioned.
I think I should just put my notes on the table, because I have no idea what is happening here. Now I’m confused. Like, is there a spat? Is there something that happened with Gene and Tony? Was Tony just fed up with not being able to do the things that he needed to do, from the competition side?Kevin Harvick said via Happy Hour Podcast.
Kevin Harvick doesn’t expect the new Haas team to be competitive
While further talking on the point, Kevin Harvick pointed out that in 2025 Haas will get back to where they were when they didn’t have Stewart on board. He expects them to struggle like they used to in the past with the Factory Haas Team venture as he reckons the legendary driver was the real difference maker at SHR.
And now, it seems like, ‘Hey, we still want to race,’ and Tony was like, ‘Screw it, I’m out of here. I’m not going to race this way, with whatever’s happening,’ and moved on in life, and now they’re right back to where they started. So, I think it’ll be very difficult for them to run this team competitively.Kevin Harvick said.
Their claims and doubts from Kevin Harvick seem to hold some merit considering he has a much better understanding of the team than many. It would be interesting to see if Gene Haas can be a winning Cup team owner without Tony Stewart.
