Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin is in his mid-40’s and yet he is performing on an elite level that most of the young garage dreams to be in. He produced his career best run in the Next-Gen era in 2025, winning six races and almost winning the championship. With his win at Las Vegas, he proved that the No:11 Toyota team will be contenders in 2026 as well.
The strong performance put the veteran in a massive Delima, as with the father time is catching up, the time has come for him to seriously consider retirement. In his recent interview with Kevin Harvick on Fox Sports, the Toyota veteran shared his thoughts on the topic. Ironically, he questioned the 2014 champion about whether he should retire or not.
If you were with a top team like I am, and you were still at the skillset you thought you were in your last year, would you go one more then?
Denny Hamlin asked Kevin Harvick.
The ex-SHR driver put himself in Denny Hamlin shoos and pointed out that it is tough for the JGR racer to quit racing. He highlighted how he had to make some tough moves and disregard the urge to move another team, before making the retirement call and joining Fox Sports as a broadcaster. But the performance situation and comparing the team, Hamlin is in a more difficult situation.
I probably would have. If I was driving and, in your situation, I probably would have kept going. But at Stewart-Haas, it was kind of at the end, and I didn’t want to go to another team and learn another system. It also became a balance of Keelan was racing…I mean, I called a bunch of people just to say, ‘how do you know,’ because you don’t know. But it would have been way harder in your situation.
Kevin Harvick said via Fox Sports.
Denny Hamlin still drew parallel between his and Kevin Harvick’s situation. He asserted that the ex-SHR racer was performing on the same level as he was on his peak when retired and he is in the same spot, with only change being he is racing for one of the best teams in the garage, who are consistently winning in the Next-Gen era.
I feel like as a competitor, I felt like when you quit… I thought you were just as competitive as you were for the first 20 years I competed against you. But, again, the situation is different because the team was on its way out, and mine is still doing really well.
Denny Hamlin asserted.
Denny Hamlin reveals his close relationship with Joe Gibbs
In the same conversation, Denny Hamlin shared his thoughts on his boss Joe Gibbs. His relationship with the NFL Hall of Famer has been key to his success and he has stated many times JGR’s opinion will matter the most when he takes decision on retirement. He was the at-track dad the 23XI Racing co-owner needs to thrive in the current era.

I just never will forget when my dad and him were out on pit road. My dad goes to him, ‘He’s all yours now.’ So that moment was just kind of was like where Joe took over as my at-track dad. He really did. I just felt like the relationship with him has grown…I would do anything for him because I know he would do anything he could for me. It’s just been a really strong relationship and a loyalty that will never break.
Denny Hamlin said.
The comments from the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran are on point and it hints at the fact that Denny Hamlin might decide to race beyond 2027, the year his contract is supposed to run out, if Gibbs ask him stay. JGR needs to invest in the most promising Toyota talent to replace the veteran racer in the No:11, if they want to remain on top.
