The 2023 Cup series season marked the return of seven times Bill France Cup winner Jimmie Johnson’s return to the top-tier, after his two-year stint in IndyCar. He joined Legacy Motor Club as a minority owner and driver of the No:84 car. His race starts with LMC has been disappointing to say the least, as his best finish of P28 from 11 starts in the last two.

Recently 2014 Cup champion Kevin Harvick shared his feeling about the Hall of Famer continuing to race despite his disappointing performance. He believes its better the veteran stop racing now for the better of his team as well as himself. The ex-SHR driver has highlighted that the marketing factor about racing is running out for Jimmie Johnson.

I think that the sooner he can get out of being in that car, the better off he is. I understand when we had the Xfinity teams of having to drive the car to lure the sponsor. But you know, as far as the marketing side of things, at some point it becomes about performance.

Kevin Harvick said via Happy Hour Podcast.

He gave ex-racer Danica Patrick as an example for how big sponsor eventually leave the racers, after a certain period when they don’t perform. Harvick highlighted that the marketing platform win run out and only performance can trump everything.

I think Danica Patrick was probably the best example of that. At some point, your marketing platform runs out, and I think that performance trumps everything that you can do after its consecutive years of not performing like you need to, and I think that’s what they’re striving for, right?

In the same podcast, Kevin Harvick further shared his feeling about how performance and sponsorship is aligned with each other. He pointed out that it will become hard to sell drivers and employees, unless the car performs on the track.

They have to get the performance where they need to or sponsorship becomes less and less and harder to sell, and then it becomes harder to sell employees and harder to sell drivers, and everything that you need to run well is all about the people, and if you don’t have the money to pay the people then it becomes harder and harder to get the performance where it needs to be.

Kevin Harvick said.

The comments from Kevin Harvick are a warning to Jimmie Johnson, and it is something the veteran should consider as he plans his future. It will be good for LMC if Johnson takes a serious role as a team owner, ending his racing career soon if he can consistently perform.
