Spire Motorsports’ youngster and the 2024 Rookie of the Year award winner Carson Hocevar is having significant spotlight in the 2025 for all the right as well as wrong reasons. He is praised for running faster than the car’s potential, but his aggressive style is ruffling the feathers of the veteran. Now Hall of Famer Kurt Busch has come in the defense of the racer.
The veteran asserted that the aggressive style of racing is what is expected of a 22-year-old racer that comes into the sport. The same drivers that are calling out Carson Hocevar were racing the same way when they came into the sport and it hypocritical seeing them slamming the youngster. Kurt Busch pointed out that the No:77 Chevy driver is charging hard to establish himself and he might face some big challenges on the way.
That’s what you want to see out of a 22-year-old kid charging hard, trying to make a name for himself. I like what he’s doing. Yeah, he’s going to have those bumps in the road.
Kurt Busch said via Performance Racing Network’s Fast Talk.
He then addressed the controversial incident that involved Ricky Stenhouse Jr. at Nashville. The later was dumped in an incident that was avoidable and was the amin reason many called Hocevar out, despite him finishing the race at P2. Busch came in for the Chevy drivers’ defense highlighting he is just learning the trade and wrecks are part of it.
Everyone has their opinion on if this was right or if that was wrong. I think he flat-out just dumped Stenhouse at Nashville and it’s like, ‘Whoops, that was a little rough.’ But he’s learning and he’s putting his time in up front. That’s what it takes.
Kurt Busch asserted.
The legendary racer then recalled the time when he made his debut in the sport. When Busch came in, he was as or more aggressive than Hocevar, while attempting make a break through. He was racing with the same attitude his whole career and was able get the garage as well as the fans on his side as the years went on.
When I was trying to break through, the veterans, they didn’t like me. The fans (didn’t like it) when I started beating their driver, right?
Kurt Busch added.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. had compared Carson Hocevar to Kurt Busch
The comparison Busch made about himself, and Hocevar was already made by another Hall of Famer. On his podcast Dale Earnhardt Jr. asserted that the latter is a driver that is similar to Kurt Busch, capable of getting the better of the car. There is only a handful of drivers that produce the extra speed from the car.

I don’t know what everybody else is sitting there thinking, but I’m sitting there going, ‘Holy s—t man, he’s improved this car by at least 10 positions.’ And that’s very Kurt Busch-like… I think that he does race above the potential of the car all the time. There are very few drivers in the entire history of the sport that do that.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.
It’s a huge compliment for the Spire Chevy driver as Kurt Busch is one of the few elite drivers that he can get inspired from to developing his racing career. Carson Hocevar has learned to take calculated aggressive moves and if he is able to do that, there is not doubt that the youngster will be a racing winner sooner than later.
