Joe Gibbs Racing’s veteran Denny Hamlin announced himself as the heel of NASCAR towards the second half of the 2023 season. Two times Cup champion Kyle Busch’s move to Richard Childress Racing and his transition to a good guy left a big hole in the sport for a villain and Hamlin took it with his both hands.

The three times Daytona 500 winner didn’t have to try much to proclaim himself as the villain, as his history of run-ins with the fan favourites has often made him one of the most dis-liked drivers. Denny Hamlin just had to embrace and it and roll with it. Kyle Busch while talking to Kenny Wallace in the ex-racers YouTube channel applauded his ex-teammate for the heel turn.

I applaud Denny for taking on the role. It’s fun to see it from another side because I knew how to live it. And that’s the thing man like, you just have to embrace it and you just have to roll with it and go with it and take it on… And say like, ‘Yeah, you hate me because I’m a badass and you’re just jealous’ like yeah!

The future Hall of Famer is enjoying the time off he gets from criticism after becoming the good guy and admitted that it’s fun to see Hamlin in the role he was once in. The No:11 Toyota driver has been doing an impressive job as the villain, it would be interesting see if he would ever get a redemption arc like Busch before retirement.

During the same conversation Kyle Busch discussed his recent struggles with RCR and their poor short track race stint. He admitted that he is running average right now and admitted that missing out on podium at Las Vegas Truck race is proof of a drop in performance from his side as well.

I think my running average right now. I ruined it at Vegas a few weeks back in the trucks but I think I had finished first, second, or third in the last 15 or 16 races in a row before finishing… 16th. But anyways just stuff like that…
Kyle Busch said.

The No:8 RCR team has been performing below their potential from the start of the 2024 season. One concerning thing about this run is the fact that the driver and team has been making mistakes during races. They need a big clean up to get back to contention and considering Busch’s prowess, they just needs to give him a capable car.
