The 2024 NASCAR Cup season has been marked with the charter wars, as teams and the sanctioning body went head-to-head over 2025-2031 deal. Things took a turn for the worst, when 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports who were the teams not signed the charter deals, decided to sue the series owners alleging monopoly.

The main reason behind the issues was the sponsorship issues in the sport, and Kyle Busch’s exit from Joe Gibbs Racing in 2022 revealed how fragile the situation is with sponsors. When the No:18 team lost the lucrative M&M deal and failed to find the right replacement, he decided to move to RCR. So, Busch see this incident as the catalyst for charter wars.

I was sort of the catalyst to this process of what’s going on in the charter agreements. When I was with Joe Gibbs Racing, we lost our main sponsor M&M’s as they pulled out of the sport, and I was left without a job because we couldn’t find a replacement sponsor.

Kyle Busch told David Rumsey of Front Office Sports.

In the same interview, Kyle Busch also talked about the health of the sport at the moment and pointed out that it can be much better spot compared to other sport. He also highlighted the family business dynamic in NASCAR and the infighting happening around revenue sharing as well.

Other sports are healthy. They’re a lot healthier than ours. NASCAR is a great family sport, and we have these opportunities of supporting one another at a lot of times and through a lot of good and a lot of bad. But as most families do, sometimes they fight.

So, there’s been some good moments of where we had strengths, a lot of the down times or the races that we weren’t as strong, we didn’t get as good of finishes as we wanted to. So, we know that we’ve got some things that we can work on this winter in order to get ourselves a lot better for next year.

The RCR veteran seems determined to get out of the poor streak and perform well in the 2025 season. It will be interesting see if Kyle Busch will be able to do so, which will be tough as the team has a lot of work to do.
