Hendrick Motorsports star driver Kyle Larson is one of the best racers in the NASCAR garage. Since making his debut in 2013, he had made 380 starts, winning 32 races alongside the 2021 Bill France Cup in a dominant display. The major reason behind his success is his willingness to live at the edges while on his car.
In the recent episode of the Games with Names podcast, Kyle Larson explained the key factor that made him successful. He admitted that he is a very aggressive drivers, compared to many of his compatriots. The No:5 Chevy driver is always on the edge on the track, whether is comes to racing his rivals of riding the wall.
I would say I am very aggressive, fast like on the edge like I would say that I live kind of on the edge and step over it often too, but I live close to the edge compared to the most compared to most drivers.
Kyle Larson said on Games with Names podcast.
But his attitude and racing style comes with its own consequences as well. No driver can get away with taking risks every time, with racing being more competitive in the Next-Gen. This created situation where he often gets in incidents with his rivals such as Denny Hamlin and even has run ins with teammates like Chase Elliott.
Another major result of his aggression is DNF, as over his career he has failed to finish 55 races. He has a combined 14% retirement rate in the whole three national series, a concerning data for a driver on his level. His worst season in terms of DNFs was 2023, where he has eight, the second most of the season. The veteran highlighted these factors in the podcast as well.
So, I think that’s where a lot of my success comes from but then that’s also where a lot of my Wrecks and DNFs like I probably crash the most too, but I also win the most So I think that aggression probably stems from all that.
Kyle Larson added.
Kyle Larson declares aggressions defines him
Further talking on the same point in the podcast, he admitted that being aggressive on the track is the defining feature of him and his racing. This style of racing is something he learned from his dirt racing ventures over the years. But he also understands that there are times he is asking too much of the car, putting his team as risk and needs some taming.

How do I keep what’s good about me and about that, but also tame it down enough to where I’m not getting DNFs or whatever, but I’m also still winning a lot and contending a lot. I think what makes Kyle Larson Kyle Larson is that aggressiveness, but yeah, I do crash a lot.
Kyle Larson said.
If he was any other driver, considering the potential and proved talent, they would have survived in the sport with such a big retirement rate as well as risk taking mentality. But Larson’s ability to remain consistent by yielding maximum results from the risks he takes sets him apart from the rest of the garage.
In the 2025 season so far, Kyle Larson has had two DNFs, but at the same time the same attitude has earned him three wins, alongside multiple close call. At the end of the day, as long as he continues to deliver multiple victory lane visits for Rick Hendrick, no one is going to question his racing style.
