Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Martin Truex Jr. is one of the cleanest racers and often the best when it comes to executing on the track. But even the greatest makes mistakes and it happened to the 2017 Cup champion last Sunday’s regular season finale at Darlington Raceway where he wrecked defending champion Ryan Blaney on lap-2.
Martin Truex Jr. lost control of his No:19 Camry on the second lap while getting a run on Willaim Byron. This resulted in him making contact with the No:12 Ford of Ryan Blaney. Both drivers wrecked and suffered significant damages, forcing DNF. Truex Jr. is really embarrassed with how the race played out for him at Darlington.
He admitted ahead of the Atlanta race that he wanted to leave Darlington immediately and just get away from everyone due to the terrible feeling he had after the wreck. MTJ reckons it was the biggest mistake of his career and what’s makes it worse is the fact that it came in finale event when his playoff spot was still on the line. But he is now over it and focused on post-season.
It was pretty wild, honestly. I wanted to leave Darlington, dig a hole and crawl into it for a couple of days. It was a terrible feeling. I felt like it was probably the biggest mistake I had made in my entire racing career, and that’s pretty bad, especially given what the day was and what was on the line. Obviously, I’m glad we made it, and we’ve got a lot of work to do. So, I’m ready to get after it.Martin Truex Jr. told RACER.
Martin Truex Jr. expects his final 10 races as a full-time driver to be fun
While talking about the crash, Martin Truex Jr. admitted that it ruined his Sunday night as all he could think was about how the incident ruined his whole season despite him getting into the post-season. But now he has gotten over it and feels he has a chance to use the next-10 races to have fun and fight for the title.
That’s all I could think of [Sunday night], was it ruined our whole season, and the next 10 weeks are going to su*K. Now we have a chance for the next 10 not to su*k. It’s going to be fun.Martin Truex Jr. said.
The veteran is coming into the post-season with more clarity and a newfound confidence. This would give the No:19 team more confidence in their driver and will be interesting to see how this will transition into performance on the track.
