Last weekend it was Denny Hamlin walling Kyle Larson for the win on the final laps was the talking point, and this week it wasn’t much different, at least for the clash part. The fight for not finishing outside the top 30 heated up on the last lap, and the drivers caused a multi-car accident here. Fortunately, no drivers or cars suffered any major damage.

The incident featured 2022 Cup season Rookie of the Year, the Team Penske Racing No:2 Ford Mustang driver Austin Cindric. It also featured Kaulig Racing veteran AJ Allmendinger, who was in the playoff bubble. The No:16 driver decided to ditch the Cup practice and qualifying yesterday to race in the Road America Xfinity Series. AJ’s bold choice didn’t play off as he started and finished the Cup race on the back.

The incident also featured Spire Motorsport’s driver Ty Dillion who has been having a disappointing season, and two Rick Ware Racing Fords alongside him. Cup legend Ryan Newman in the No:51 car and veteran JJ Yeley were the RWR drivers involved in the incidents. All the drivers involved in the wreck were having a bad week since qualifying, as they started and finished the race in the bottom ten.

While calling the race for NBC Sports, NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. claimed that the drivers involved had been fighting hard for positions through the laps and there was a possibility of such an incident happening on turn two. He added that the fight is a testament to how competitive the Cup drives are.

NASCAR fans on Twitter had a mixed reaction to the incident. Some claimed it was the most entreating thing in the race as the event was predominantly dominated by a handful of drivers and featured limited passing. Few fans used the opportunity to mock Ty Dillion and Austin Cinderic, two drivers continuing their poor streak in 2023.
