The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson‘s wife, Chandra Johnson’s parents, and 11-year-old nephew died in June. Their tragic death was believed to be a murder-suicide case, and the Muskogee, Oklahoma police’s primary suspect was Jimmie Johnson’s mother-in-law. The police believed Chandra Johnson’s mother shot her husband and grandson at their home before killing herself. However, the case was under investigation.
Recently, there have been new developments in the case. RadarOnline reported that an autopsy confirmed the Muskogee police department’s suspicion. Terry Lynn Janway, Jimmie Johnson’s mother-in-law, shot her husband and grandson on June 26th at their family home in Oklahoma. The authorities had received a call that lasted for 22 seconds. And a woman stated, “There is somebody here with a gun.”
According to the documents released by Oklahoma’s Chief Medical Examiner, Johnson’s nephew Dalton Janway (11) had “gunshot wounds to the head and chest.” His father-in-law Dr.Jack Lee Janway (69), lost his life due to a gunshot to his chest. Though both these deaths were homicide cases, Terry’s was not. The documents reported that she had suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot to the chest.

What was the reason behind Terry Janway’s action?
The documents also revealed that Terry Lynn Janway suffered from blunt force injuries. The toxicology report suggested that she was not intoxicated at the time of the shooting, as she was neither on drugs nor under the influence of alcohol. However, the reason behind her action remains unknown. There have been published reports which imply Chandra Johnson’s mother was depressed as she could not cope with the death of her son Jordan in 2014.
The 27-year-old Jordan lost his life tragically due to a skydiving accident. According to USA Today, he could not open his parachute after a collision mid-air with a fellow skydiver, and his emergency chute also did not work. There is speculation that this might have been the reason behind her depression.
Jimmie Johnson and Janway’s daughter Chandra have been married since 2004 and have two lovely children. There is no doubt that the NASCAR champion was upset by the tragic death of his in-laws. He withdrew from the Chicago Cup race and took time to mourn his loss. Following the heartbreaking news, Legacy Motor Club stated, “The Johnson family has asked for privacy at this time, and no further statements will be made.” Johnson had support from his friends and fans as they were behind him and his family during this unfortunate period.
