“Brain injury recovery doesn’t always take a linear path,” Kurt Busch to miss his 4th consecutive race of the season due to a concussion
Kurt Busch
Kurt Busch sustained a concussion three weekends ago at Pocono Raceway after he crashed out during the practice run in July. The veteran will be again replaced by JGR prodigy Ty Gibbs, who took the No:45 to the top 20 in his last three outings as Busch’s substitute at the Richmond Raceway. The consecutive race misses have put the playoff spot held but the veteran at risk.
The 23X1 Racer now ranks 15th in the playoff entry table, just one place ahead of Ryan Blaney, who remains winless. With Kevin Harvick winning last weekend at Michigan, which made him the 15th different winner of the season, Busch is in a tight spot for the coming three cup races as he will be the first race winner to miss out on the playoffs if any of two drivers that rank higher than him in the playoff standing secure their first win.
Ty Gibbs has been an opportunity to cherish for the rest of this season as he has both a fast car and a supportive team in 23X1 Racing. Kurt Busch might have missed out on a win in the last three racers, considering how short his teammate Bubba Wallace was able to drive the No:23 car, especially last week at Michigan.
Kurt Busch missing out on this week’s race more had to do with the veteran overworking himself for a fast recovery than the recovery being too slow. So, both He and the team need to ensure that he has the right path to recovery at a slow but correct pace rather than hustling.

Kurt Busch acknowledged that recovering from brain injuries is not a linear path, even though he has been feeling well in the last few days. He added that he pushed himself to put his heart, race, and body in race type situation, which made him realize that he isn’t fully fit to make a comeback.
“Brain injury recovery doesn’t always take a linear path. I’ve been feeling well in my recovery, but this week I pushed to get my heart rate and body in a race simulation type environment, and it’s clear I’m not ready to be back in the race car,” Kurt Busch wrote on Twitter.
Kurt Busch said that this had been the most challenging week for him on the way to recovery. He backed his remark by pointing out that his body is yet to be ready to cope with the extreme condition that he might face on the track, even though there is progression.
“This was by far the hardest week emotionally because I do feel the progression of recovery, but racing requires an extreme physical and mental effort, and my body is not 100% able to sustain the intense race conditions,” Kurt Busch added.
Kurt Busch said he is encouraged by his team of doctors to do everything it takes to get back to his 100%. He thanked individuals who have been extending their support to him and wished good luck to Ty Gibbs, who will replace him on the No:45 ride.
“I am encouraged by my team of doctors, and we will continue to do everything it takes to get me to 100% to return to the competition. Thanks to everyone for the continued support and best of luck to the 45 team and Ty this weekend in Richmond,” says Kurt Busch.
