While 23XI Racing rejoiced to score their and Toyota’s first win of 2023 with Tyler Reddick, the team’s happiness meter is not on the positive side, leaving COTA. Yet another disastrous performance on Sunday from Bubba Wallace, the poster boy of the team, poses concerns. The disappointments double for the team, considering Wallace was strong during the practice and qualifiers, and though road course isn’t his strong suit, the No:23 team had the pace for a Top 10 finish.

He was disappointed with his run at COTA, and was pretty hard on him with criticism on his interview with Fox soon after DNF.  Wallace said, “Just trying my hardest not to go down this slippery slope of self-doubt right here. Two weeks in a row of making rookie mistakes six years into Cup? Need to be replaced,”.

While the last two finishes, at Phoenix and Altana, were partially his fault, the COTA result wasn’t completely on him. He had an oil leak, and the crash with Kyle Larson on lap 11 of the race, which also collected bystander Erik Jones, forced his day to end early. Larson also witnessed a similar fate in the later half of the race as he took out Ty Dillon, slamming right onto him due to mechanical failure.

Bubba Wallace has a load of expectations on his shoulder coming into the 2023 season after the breakout in 2022. Though he failed to secure a playoff spot, Wallace’s win at the Kansas playoff race was enough to silence his haters. He had a strong start to his season following Daytona 500 P20. He scored top 5 finishes in Fontana and Vegas before entering the DNF streak in Phoniex.

Bubba Wallace might be too hard with self-criticism

One thing Bubba Wallace is known for in the cup garage is the no-nonsense opinion he has of himself. He is never shy of admitting his mistakes and criticizing himself for it on live Camara. While it accepting one maitake and being ready critics, oneself is a commendable quality, sometimes it becomes a flow.

Wallace has a big bag of expectations on his shoulders, and being the sole full-time black Cup racer puts everything he does in the limelight. On some occasions, Wallace demands too much from himself, and it leads to self-doubt and other issues that negatively affect his performance. The unwanted hate and criticism he receives online and offline for doing what he loves also don’t help.
